Possibly you are thinking Flash Media Live Encoder and Adobe Flash Media Server?
The standard CS6 bundles won’t help with live streaming, AFAIK.
You also might need to re-think the whole setup: generally live streaming requires a separate ingest system or device for each stream, unless I am missing something. E.g. (if I understand it right) you would use three systems each with Flash Media Live Encoder installed that capture, prepare, and send out an encoded video feed to a server. A server will in turn broadcast (stream) those feeds.
There are other ways to do this (e.g. the server can be a streaming service such as UStream or LiveStream) but on the ingest part it is usually still, a separate system or a device for each stream.

SLI requires two supported graphics cards (usually the same model) which you don’t seem to be planning on. Is there some specific application you will be using that requires SLI?
I don’t believe Decklink Studio supports passing three simultaneous streams to the system; for that, you would normally need something like Decklink Quad, and then get a custom application that can encode three simultaneous streams. Bottom line, it’s not very trivial unless I’ve been living in a cave for the last few years and missed some major developments with BMD cards.
Osprey 460e on the other hand does allow independent input of up to four streams and prep them for streaming.
What software and/or service do you plan to use for streaming?

Hi Steve,
The system looks OK:
– the power supply is an overkill; 900-1100W will be more than sufficient including for future upgrades
– I’d drop the extra sound card – you’ve got the on-board sound which isn’t bad, and the BMD Decklink card which also has its own sound. Adding more just confuses everybody.The Decklink is not a graphics card, it’s a video I/O with additional functions. You’re not running SLI either. So no worries here.
Why do you need 3 composite inputs? Do you plan to capture 3 video streams at the same time?

Not with USB 3.0 specifically but with several WD Caviar Black drives that test OK and generally work fine except freeze for 15 seconds every so often.
I don’t think it has anything to do with Adobe. I’d try a different USB 3.0 drive first, then go from there.

As long as he can follow some basic guidelines in terms of system configuration for video editing, no pitfalls that I can think of.
Will your son-in-law be available in case something goes wrong (hard drive dies)?
Might be a good idea to post the proposed configuration (a list of components) here for some crowd-vetting.
Finally, if you do need to call someone for application-specific support (e.g. why does Premiere Pro drop frames on this timeline and not the other; how do I fix it?) that your son-in-law may not be able to answer, then consider getting a complete system from a video integrator (ADK, Puget).
(Not suggesting Boxx, HP, etc. – those will cost on a par with a Mac Pro.)

Totally. On 8 decent drives, 600-800MB/s in RAID6 with Areca 1882x or ATTO R680 (I prefer Areca for speed although ATTO is a more established brand.) Expander 8-bay JBOD from Areca/ CineRAID – $1699, non-expander – $799.

Is there a specific reason for Fibre Channel? (Distance, sharing?)
If not, any reason DAS Mini-SAS won’t work?
Unless you need sharing – as Jon suggested – the highest RAID5/6 performance per buck ratio is with MiniSAS based controllers and storage boxes.

You’re saying that the system is too slow for any GPU acceleration to happen?
Somehow I don’t believe that. It’s not exactly an IBM PC AT after all. The GA does happen very nicely on a similarly equipped xw8400, on Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, with a very, very noticeable boost in fps and rendering speeds.

I sure have Matt: the card (we are using) is EVGA GTX-570 and all the requirements on that page are met. So at the moment, no clue why it’s not behaving.
