Check your memory usage while you’re editing. On OSX, you can use Activity Monitor. If memory usage gets close to the limit, and the system seriously slows down – then yes, memory will likely be a more feasible upgrade. Otherwise – the GPU.

1. A NAS similar to yours except with 10GbE port and an appropriate switch, and someone behind it all to help you figure out if something is not right. E.g. buy one from me, Bob or other integrator. Except Bob will likely steer you away from an appliance like this one. He’ll probably say it’s an appliance, not a “pro” tool and he’ll be right, in a way. Price ballpark – $3-5K. Expandable.
2. GB Labs Mini Space (up to 4.5TB, $11K and up) or Midi Space (up to 13.4TB, $15-22K). 1GbE line speeds (100+MB/s for multiple clients simultaneously), 10GbE options. This is a “pro” tool, with full manufacturer support for editing and other high bandwidth applications.

What datarate do you need to have at each editing station?
When you say “too slow”, what are the symptoms?
Is it possible the bottleneck is in the network, not Synology?

I believe Premiere Pro uses the primary GUI card (the one driving monitor 1) for GPU acceleration unless in Maximus configuration.

670 runs cooler, eats lets power, supports up to four monitors, PCIe 3.0. That may not matter in your situation, the card is just a little more future proof, and the fact that it runs cooler, may mean less chance of a failure.

It’s not what I asked. The question was, does ANYONE care what’s behind an iSCSI target as long as it’s fast enough, doesn’t break and is managed easily? Would you buy a new Mac Pro to set up an iSCSI target? I hope not. 🙂
And, please, you don’t need an expensive switch for an iSCSI network with 5 GbE nodes. Non-blocking, flow control, and Bob’s your uncle. :p

The dSLR file – it’s an mp4? Not QuickTime?
Have you tried playing one of the problematic clips on any other computer with GPU acceleration enabled? Just to be sure it’s a problem with the system, not some weird glitch with the files. If not, try uploading a small clip (under 50MB) to GDrive, DropBox, etc., and posting a link here, maybe someone would be willing to test it.
Is Pr full patched (updated)?
