Non-expander boxes – sure. Norco SAS Expander boxes are still quite a bit more expensive, which makes this one look a little TGTBT (too good to be true).

I ran into this too, and nearly any other SAS expanders are over $1K for a similar box. So it’s a bargain, with a couple of caveats:
– it’s 3G SAS, not 6G
– may not work with other enclosure brands for expansion / daisy-chaining
– Support may be non-existent or hard to reachMy favorite drives are HGST Ultrastars 7K3000 and 7K4000 series.

If I understood Jesse right, G-Tech is sending a replacement box (eS Pro MiniSAS enclosure) so we’ll know shortly. The box has three key components: power supply, backplane, internal cabling. So if the replacement box fixes the issue, we’ll know it was one of those three things, and that’s likely all we’ll ever know. 🙂

It’s always cost vs. benefit, and both of these mean different things to different editors (and people).
In a facility where storage downtime costs $5K an hour, uptime has a different value vs. to someone who edits on the weekends.
Sure, for some “the cheapest RAID” is the best RAID – and I don’t know too many of those, and they are just unlikely to hire me. 🙂

It’s possible, though somewhat unlikely: no moving parts, and it’s one of those things that us usually either on or off. That said, a bent pin on one of the SAS connectors could wreak spectacular (and mysterious) havoc.
This is one of those cases where crowd-sourced guesswork is good, but won’t necessarily lead to a solution. Someone has to painstakingly go through all possible culprits one-by-one, like the OP and BZ already started: from the host system itself, the controller, cabling, drives, backplane, etc. Eventually the culprit will be found, although the OP is SOL until then. 🙁
