    I am a salesman, for sure; although more of an engineer – like Bob. There’s something to be said about playing with a lot of toys from various vendors for a number of years for a living. Not every user is exposed to that. So perhaps salesman’s perspective has a value, after a large grain of salt of course.

    Very curious about that. Would love to test the Q with a “known good” eSATA card that has been proven to run at 250MB/s (in 3G). Just can’t fathom needing a $300 SAS HBA to run the Q at full speeds.

    Haven’t tested it myself. Similar 4-bay multi-interface RAID5 boxes from CineRAID and ProAvio – read speeds similar to yours; write speeds in the 150MB/s range.

    G-Tech used to post benchmarks on their product pages – don’t see any for the “Q”. Bummer.

    The only speed test I saw for the “Q” has numbers similar to yours (on 3G eSATA): 174/104. The review is from two years ago though, with a different Q model – the one that didn’t have USB 3.0 yet. (The funny part is that even their current datasheet still has USB 2.0 on it.)

    It’s unlikely anyone here will be able help you no matter the alphabet soups they throw at the problem: the only way to get real answers is to ask fellow Q users, what numbers they are seeing, and you may have better chances on G-Tech forums.

    My hunch is that what you’re seeing is normal, the effect of either a slow RAID5 brain, or having write caching off on the drives or on the controller. (The latter is the right way to do it with RAID5 controllers w/o battery backup.) I could be wrong of course. The Q however was never intended a speed demon despite the “speed” moniker: they’re primarily backup and archival devices.

    Drobos in general aren’t famous for their performance, but I’d love to hear exactly what was horrible – what were the pain points.

    I haven’t had first-hand experience with either CalDigits or ActiveRAIDs although some cows here are using them. Both HDPro24 and ActiveRAID appear to be SAN-ready systems, with over $10K for 24-48TB configurations: configuring them for shared access will add quite a few $$$ to the price tag, as well.

    If you are OK with direct-attached storage, I’d look at ProAvio and CineRAID SAS expanders: a 64TB 16-bay configuration with redundant power, Areca 1882x, ATTO R680 or one of the mid-range LSI controllers – in the $9-11K range.

    If you need shared storage, I’d look at NAS boxes from QNAP and Thecus – purchased through a good video integrator (not through online retailers) – as you may need help configuring and maintaining them.

    Primarily marketing although Quadro cards support a 10-bit color pipeline (not on a Mac though); some offer the added reliability of ECC memory. I haven’t seen a single benchmark on today’s apps where K5000 would pull away from a GTX-580 or 680 in performance. If anyone has seen one, please share.

    That said, K5000 only needs 122W peak power and a single 6-pin power connector that a Mac Pro already has. GTX-680 Mac – 195W and two 6-pin plugs. It comes with the right power adapters though.

    For performance alone in most apps (including Pr CC), it’s GTX-680 Mac.

    Hi Dave,

    For the graphics card, it’s usually 2 or 4; for the Studio card – any other one except PCI of course.

    What does the BSOD screen say? Anything in the Windows logs? How often do these BSODs happen and is there any pattern to them (at what point in the booting, application start or editing)?

    Have you tried rolling back the driver?

    …running the system w/o the card for a few days to see if BSODs go away?

    …Installing a fresh Win7-64 on a separate disk or partition (along with your editing app, and the BMD driver) and seeing if the problem recurs?

    There is a small possibility the card itself is bad and causing problems; zeroing in on it would require borrowing / getting another BMD card just to see if the problem recurs.

  • Eric says journaling adds overhead and can be used to restore (fix) corrupted files (i.e. fix file system inconsistencies). Isn’t he right about that?

    Chris says journaling in itself is not a backup/restore mechanism as it doesn’t save actual file contents, only metadata. Does this conflict anything Eric said?

    Chris says SAS/SATA controllers aren’t file system aware, they deal with block data. Eric says RAID controllers deal with RAID sets and are responsible for data integrity on them, which could be related to OP’s problems.

    Are there really any conflicts between what you two are saying?
