So I have Traditional Chinese added in the Preferred Languages section of Language & Region (just beneath English in the priority order) but find that Avid still converts all Chinese characters to question marks. The same happens if I change the Keyboard Input Sources to Chinese (from Keyboard settings in System Preferences).

As a test, I restarted my system with Traditional Chinese as the primary language. Now when importing these files, Avid is able to preserve the Chinese characters. However, once I switch the primary language for the system back to English, when I reopen Avid all the Chinese characters have switched to other symbols, like “ºAªL.∂¬¶Y∂¬.≤_™Œ¶œ ™Ùº›πƒ∂¿™”.

I’ve also tried a number of different fonts within Avid, such as Arial Unicode MS, which has a good track record of working in different languages, but haven’t had any success.

So I’m still looking for a solution here, will keep experimenting.

Thanks for your advice, Glenn! Yeah, unfortunately this is one of those situations where we only have one chance to work with the tapes, so to be safe, we’ll clone them for now. That makes sense, to just treat the clones like any other offline media for now. Hopefully later on we can run them through a teranex-type device to upconvert, as you’ve suggested. At least this way we’ll have options for things like this in the future. Thanks!

We’re capturing the HD material in full-res from the start, but at DNxHD 36 for offline editing. At the end we’ll conform the DNxHD 36 sequence to DNxHD 175x for online.

Thanks for your response Shane! Sorry, I’m realizing now I was a little unclear.

These tapes are an SD archival source that will be used in the film, but the rest of the footage is HD and so the final film will be onlined in HD. So considering this SD footage will eventually be included in an HD sequence that goes out for color correction, will capturing at DV25 via firewire suffice? Or would it be better to capture 1:1 via SDI?

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately we need to leave everything in original frame rates and edit that way, as we are finishing in 3D, and the facility handling the finishing has requested that we maintain original frame rates (it’s a pretty messy situation as you can probably imagine, considering they switched frame rate mid-shoot while filming 3D).

So I’m able to transcode the 23.98 footage without problem, it stays 23.98. But unfortunately I can’t find a way to transcode the 24 fps footage so that it stays 24 fps and also retains Reel and Source TC. Any ideas?
