Dave, you’re absolutely right. It’s a studio full of PC’s, and they’re afraid of compression because they assume it’s gonna look like crap. I’m gonna take their large files and convert them to ProRes HQ in Compressor from the beginning and then edit with that. We’re outputting to that format anyway so might as well convert it at some point. I’m assuming when I do the final output there wouldn’t be additional compression if the sequence is ProRes HQ native.

I solved the problem by converting all footage into Prores HQ. Doesn’t even need rendering now 🙂 Thanks guys!

That makes sense. Would using compressor to batch convert be the most sensible option. This is for an online, so it should be high quality. Thanks.

Thank you for the detailed instructions Chris! I just learned that I can do the edit in DVDSP which will be the easiest solution. I don’t really care that I can only cut on the I-frame, as long as the overall Mpeg2 video quality is retained with no additional compression. Hopefully the I frame factor doesn’t interfere with the fact that my footage is 23.98 progressive.

I’m revisiting this post as I still have the same issue. When I try to export a still in FCP using Quicktime conversion, it looks fat. Is it a simple matter of video pixels being a different size than square computer pixels? But since I’m viewing both images on a Mac, it shouldn’t really matter…

Also, in regards to the kid, his head is that long. He has an “unusually” long head. I compared it to still photos I have of him.

Does exporting from FCP have higher quality even if it uses “Quicktime Conversion”?

    Here’s the settings:

    Hm, they don’t differ.

You could be right. I’m not sure as it’s been years since I’ve seen the kid.
