February 22, 2012 at 11:07 am in reply to: HyperDeck 2.5 Beta 2 software available now.Great job with the Beta 2, you’re definitely heading somewhere now. I have two HyperDeck Studios that I simply love. Just a few questions…
1. Is implementing ProRes recording and playback something that you are considering? This would be really helpful for all of us who do not use Avid. I love the ability to record uncompressed, however it is not always practical.
2. What is the plan with the ethernet port? Like many others, I think that the ability to control the unit AND transfer files via ethernet would be excellent – don’t know if this is possible with the current hardware, though. Would have been really cool to run some kind of playlist application on a PC or Mac, to control the playout from the HDS.
Thank you for the attention, and for a GREAT product! I do look forward to seeing another software update.

2) The UltraScope PCI-E version has SDI loop through, so you should be able to loop it out to an SDI to HDMI converter, however I don’t know how much delay this will introduce. Also, you cannot have a UltraScope card installed along with a BMD capture card, the drivers won’t let you.
3) In my opinion, going uncompressed is a waste of disk space. If you are going uncompressed, at least use an 8-bit preset. I am not sure if ProRes LT is a viable option, someone else might have some input for you here.
4) This is the way I would do it, however I am not sure if it matters that much. While you would definitely benefit from recording the analogue feed while actually recording (not playing out from tape), the video on the tape is already compressed, and I am not sure if you will get any better quality with either option.

[Jeff Hartman] “Another improvement with the newer firmware: you can map physical inputs to whichever switcher buttons you prefer (and the keyboard hot keys follow).”
Does this apply to the ATEM TVS too?Aleksander Steffensen

February 13, 2012 at 9:01 am in reply to: Selecting HD Recorder AJA or BlackmagicBoth are excellent choices, however I would say that you get more bang for the bucks if you get the HyperDeck Studio. Yes, the files from HyperDeck Studio are compatible with FCP7. Remember that you will need to purchase a separate embedder, as the HyperDeck Studio does not have any audio inputs.

You cannot do this out of the box, but you may be able to do it with an external RS-422 editing controller that support multiple recorders, or you could probably make something custom to do it, however I am not sure how you would go about doing that.

January 25, 2012 at 10:48 am in reply to: Streaming over 4G – Bonded Cellular SolutionDo take a look at the Teradek Cube (https://cube.teradek.com/encoders.html), they are inexpensive (compared to the other solutions), and I believe they do what you’re asking.

Running 400 metres of composite video without any amplification is extremely optimistic, whether it is coax or CAT5E. Unless there are several amplifiers involved along the way, yes, the viewer is going to notice alot of difference. The signal will probably be unusable. 400 metres is too long even with SDI. I think you can run a 400 metre cable stretch with an SD-SDI signal if you reclock the signal, but I believe that is the maximum distance. I have no engineer education, but the way I see it, you need to go fibre.

Yes, it can record uncompressed SD, I don’t know how it works with DNxHD, but I assume Blackmagic is going to add more recording formats in the future. There is no way to copy data from the SSDs via ethernet, you will need a hard drive docking station or something like that.

HyperDeck Studio currently does not offer any control over file names. Files are simply named “Capture0001.mov” and so on. If you think this functionality should be included, be sure to send BMD an e-mail with your feedback.

That is certainly one solution. The other is to buy an embedder, and embed the audio into the SDI signal that goes into your DeckLink card.
