Hi – In an anamorphic timeline, the footage looks the same but with bacl on the right and left. When exported as a quicktime, it is squeezed.

It was not shoot in 16X9. And I even did another test with the DVX, same settings as usual (just shooting in 4:3) and still – the same thing…

Hi again! So I answered your questions below.

It’s strange though because I don’t even think that the camera shoots in 16×9.

“If you bring that clip into FCP, and look at it, is the canvas 16:9 or 4:3?”
it is 4:3

“If you load it into the viewer, which ratio is it?”
4:3

“Look at the clip in the browser in list view, is the anamorphic box checked?”
No

“What’s listed under aspect ratio?”
720 x 480/ 29.97 fps

I have been using DV NTSC and it’s all of a sudden that this is going on. About a month ago was the last time I imported some of the exact same footage – and it’s Quicktime files play just fine….

Arrrggg…. OH… AND…. I exported a QT file from the timeline and opened it up in QT and it’s fine. WTF???? What to do?

That’s what I figure. Interesting still is that through my experimenting I have captured various other clips from different sources/cameras and this problem is only happening when I capture something that was shot using the Panasonic DVX-100. (This has never happened before with this camera). Is it possible the QT and/or FCP are “reading” something from the tape that says it’s 16X9?? I’m going to reinstall FCP and see it that solves the problem. (I even moved a caputred clip over to another computer and still it opens it 16 X 9)

HI – thanks for your reply! I double checked that the clips are not being imported as DV anamorphic. They aren’t. I just watched most of the footage through FCP into the TV monitor and everything looks normal… correct aspect ratio… would you reimport??

Ignore the frame rate in quicktime. It is often wrong and definitely not exact.

Your clips must be anamorphic, or they are tagged anamorphic. 853×480 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, while 720×480 is a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Are you sure you didn’t use the DV anamorphic preset?
