I just wanted to add some more to my original post.
The HPX170 might be a better choice if you do a lot of handheld run and gun type shooting, as it’s lighter and a bit easier to manage as a handheld camera.
However, after spending some time with both the EX1 and the HPX170, I’d say that the EX1 definitely has a more solid, substantial feel than the 170 – less plastic, heavier body, better lens focus and iris controls. The EX1/EX3’s full-manual focus mode, in which the focus ring has set stop points, is an excellent feature that allows you to do a perfect rack focus or use a follow focus if needed. To me, the HPX170 just feels cheap next to the EX1.
The EX3 would be far superior to the HPX170 for use as a shoulder-mounted camera.

The EX3 has the BIG advantage of using SxS cards that fit right in the ExpressCard slot of your Mac Pro. MUCH faster transfer time than using Firewire form the camera.
I’ve compared footage from the EX1 with the 170 and I found the EX1 to be sharper and less noisy. The EX3 is essentially the same camera as the EX1, so I think it’s safe to extrapolate.
Spend some time reading the Sony CineAlta forum and you’ll learn that all of the excessive hand-wringing about the long GOP compression is basically unnecessary. XDCAM EX != HDV.
In short, I’d cast my vote for the Sony.

Why are you installing “multimedia” projectors in a cinema environment? Multimedia projectors are optimized for computer presentations (PowerPoint, etc.), not video playback. If your application is a multipurpose convention center type environment, then so be it, but if you are mainly going to use the systems for the projection of video material, I would strongly suggest you rethink using general multimedia LCD projectors and instead research native 1080p digital cinema projectors, even if they are higher end home theater models.
You don’t state what video format you’re going to be primarily showing – will it be SD or HD material? If it’s mainly SD, then a multimedia projector would be adequate. HD however, would be much better served by a native 16:9 1080p projector.
Most multimedia projectors are native 4:3 and top out at SXGA resolution, which is 1280×1024. That would allow you to play letterboxed 720p at native resolution, but any 1080p footage would be downscaled by the projector.
H.264 is a great codec for low-bandwidth delivery at a high level of quality.

There’s no need to get snotty, Ron. I’m merely questioning the logic behind having two separate forums if it’s pretty obvious that most people who should use the Basics forum don’t.
In my opinion, if a separate forum is required, it makes more sense to have an Advanced forum than a Basics forum. It seems that others on this forum share my opinion. If you disagree, that’s fine, but don’t be condescending about it.

It would help to know what kind of “full screen video playback” you are using. Do you have a broadcast CRT connected to your system through a video capture card? Are you viewing footage played back through a monitor connected to a deck or camera that is connected to the host computer via Firewire? Are you simply using the “Digital Cinema Desktop” feature to play back your video on your computer monitor?
These are basic details that you should include in your question to help readers figure out what your problem is.
If you’re looking at standard definition DV playing back full-screen on your computer monitor, then yes, it will look awful.

Thank you for acknowledging the issue, David. This isn’t a question of elitism or hatred of newbies, just a desire to separate the level of questions in to appropriate forums. We were all newbies at some point, and it’s great to have the Cow as a resource for self-education and peer polling.
