The regular Final Cut Pro forum is full of very basic beginner questions. Why bother having the “Final Cut Pro Basics” forum if no one really uses it or polices the regular forum? How about having a “Final Cut Pro Advanced” forum instead?

    Alan,

I agree, and I think many others do too, that something is definitely awry in FCP land, and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating for the more advanced users.

It seems that FCP is taking over the world and every new user is coming here for lessons in lieu of reading the manual.

I don’t know what the solution is, but it does seem that many long- time members are starting to get irritated.

Thank you for acknowledging the issue, David. This isn’t a question of elitism or hatred of newbies, just a desire to separate the level of questions in to appropriate forums. We were all newbies at some point, and it’s great to have the Cow as a resource for self-education and peer polling.

    Alan,

I’m a forum leader on FCP Basics too, and I’ve always tried to be there to support all users when in need, so I’m certianly not intending to sound elitist in any way. However, things seem to have gotten kind of nutty here over the last nine months or so, and neither Basics nor the FAQ have really helped.

I’ve noticed an enormous number of new FCP users cutting HD projects who have no experience cutting SD projects, and that doesn’t help the situation either. It just may be a product of the times???

THAT is exactly what we need. Because people don’t tend to go looking for the BASICS forum…they find this one and then pop the questions. But the advanced users, they would want to find the place to pop the really tough questions.

I recall another forum site (ahem…sorry) that had that too. FCP, then FCP Advanced Techniques or something like that.

Basic questions are still welcome, as us Mods don’t mind answering them (I have 45 pre-typed answers just waiting to be used)…but the regular folk might tire of slogging thru all that.

It’s there Bob, but you kind of have to look hard to find it. Poke around up at the top of the forum and you’ll find it you’re lucky.

The FAQ has been active for about three months. Nobody uses it. The link is right here on the forum and has been for three months. I stopped adding to it as it seems nobody even bothers to use it.

[David Roth Weiss] “just a desire to separate the level of questions “

I’ve been reading this forum almost daily for the last three years, and I’ve noticed the same sort of thing recently. I think a few days ago someone finally suggested “hiring an editor” to a poster with a slew of basic questions. Priceless.

All of these very basic questions seem to come from a constant stream of new users. While this is great for the COW, it does tend to clutter the forum. Since it seems that every new user _must_ post in the main FCP forum, perhaps the regular users could help sort it out.

Would it be possible to use the COW “ratings” as a filter for the board? Sort of like the way that Digg works, where the good posts get highlighted, and the tedious ones fall below a threshold and disappear to the masses?

That way people can identify posts that will likely get a “search the board / read the manual” response, 1-cow them (if they don’t feel like responding), and eventually they’ll be hidden? Of course, the mods would still see all of the posts, and drop the appropriate stock answers as needed.

Just an idea. I like the cow ratings, but no one seems to use them….

Wow, I just noticed that the FAQ’s done. Maybe it needs a banner ad…

Or, maybe, there should be a brief tutorial when you sign up (or try to post) as a new user – here is the FAQ, here is the search, etc.

I’m just full of ideas today!

It is being done and will be as ignored as the basics forum is right now. If we were to have an FCP Advanced forum, then all the noobs would post there to make sure they got the “real” answers, not the ones from the guys hosting on the other forum. It’s a human nature thingie and if I had the answer, I’d bottle it and sell it to every company that faces these issues.
