Why bother having a “basics” forum?

I’m not criticizing, and I am volunteering, and I’m asking the other mods to volunteer as well. I just don’t know if the software is set up to allow that.

That’s Tom’s point. The moderators on this forum do not have the ability to move the posts. If we could, we would. We’re all volunteers. The only people who can move or delete posts are the folks who run the Creative Cow.
In short, don’t criticize unless you understand how the forums work.

I see it now. its the one at top that sez FAQ.
seeing as how its in row with other links for adding and replying to posts, i Assumed it was an FAQ on how to use the forums. It would be good to change the wording to say FCP FAQ and or put it in with the other links that deal with forums and such.
I mean, i thought I was a pretty samrt guy, but i missed it all this time, maybe others are missing it too?

Our point, Bob, is that many people are basically lazy and won’t even bother to click a link to see what’s there. That would take too much effort, I guess. They would rather ask the same question again and again because they see themselves as being more important than all of the others who asked before them — they deserve a personal answer, not the same one that someone else got before them. Research an answer? No thanks, I only have a minute or two so I will ask it for the thousandth time.
Many won’t click a link that says “FAQ” and even if we changed it to flashing neon that reads “This is the FCP FAQ and has the answers to many common questions, please we are begging you to click this and see if your question might be answered here already. Please, we beg you…” — it wouldn’t change human nature.
So, the real answer in all of this is ignore the newbie questions if you don’t like them — if you know they are there, ignore them. Let the “almost newbies” answer the total newbies. This way, you aren’t bothered and the people whose knowledge is just beginning to grow can feel like they are participating.
I have no idea why people feel that they are obligated to answer every question, we never set that as our policy and so answer the ones you want, ignore the rest, there are enough users around here that someone is likely to answer even the questions that have been asked over and over and over.
In life, I have found few perfect answers. We sure don’t have any.

OK, here’s an idea – but I dunno if it’s practical. Is there a way of tagging posts as ‘Basic’ or ‘Newbie’ from the get-go – so a moderator could look at a post and quickly give it a marker – that way, we’d know what’s ‘basic’ or not and can prioritise answers accordingly. You could then do away with the basics forum…
just an idea…
