CPU usage percentage is not a good measure of performance. What framerate do you get? The status bar at the bottom of pIllusion shows the framerate. When you click in the preview window or the library window, the framerate shows for the preview window. When you hit the “play” button, the framerate shows for the stage window.
On my laptop, with the “Boom 3” emitter showing in the preview window, the framerate starts off in the upper 20’s, but then drops down (which makes sense because more particles are being created over time). The lowest it gets before the emitter repeats (with the repeat set to 2 secs) is about 12.5 fps.
If your framerate is much lower than that, or if you get a warning when pIllusion starts about hardware acceleration, then you need to update your video drivers. Check the Nvidia website for this.
