Aha! I never even thought of that. I guess I should have asked you to reset the preferences.

You can just click and drag the emitter to create position keys at different frames, or r-click on the emitter and “record position”.

The “run with software rendering” option (if you used it from the Start – Programs menu) only applies to the current run of particleIllusion. So if you use software rendering, close particleIllusion, then run it again normally (not using the “run with software rendering” option) then it’s not using software rendering.
You can switch particleIllusion to always use software rendering on the OpenGL page of the Preferences dialog. Uncheck the “use hardware acceleration” checkbox, then click OK to close all dialogs, close particleIllusion, then run it again.
I suggest you do this and if the “minidumps” still occur, please tell me in as much detail as you can what you are doing when they do happen.

A lot of people don’t realize that they already have particleView. It’s been installed with the Windows version since pIllusion 3.0.2 was released a few months ago.

That looks like an OpenGL issue. Verify in particleIllusion by using “run with software rendering” in the Start – Programs – particleIllusion 3″ menu or turn off hardware acceleration in the OpenGL page of the preferences.
If it works with software rendering, then it is a video driver issue. Updated video drivers from your card manufacturer’s website should fix the problem.

If you’re using the Windows trial version, there are no limitiations (other than it only works for 30 days).

If you set the particle type color options to “get color from layer” you can make any emitter work this way.

After clicking the “add force” button, you need to click in the stage window (in “Add” mode) to add the force, just like adding an emitter.
