I’ll say. only its worse in a way – and almost degrading to adobe as was? It really is a wall of channels argument – only in this case, I’m not brushing off SKY television, or whatever the american equivalent is (comcast?) Buried in my new rent cheque to adobe for a ton of stuff I have no clue how to use, are the tools I used to own that I keep bread on the table with. I can actually refuse a SKY subscription. Adobe are very well aware that we likely cannot refuse their terms, as they remove ownership of software.
I mean, what’s on the CC web landing page? “you’ve finished that website, now fire up Premiere Pro and cut all the corporate brand material! Nail that extra billing!”
It just feels crass, and more than a little bit weird.
If I’m going to be honest – I think there is a CEO who thought he was going to rule the world with Flash as a universal runtime, and told a lot of investment fund shareholders that was going to happen, and that didn’t happen at all. Now he is setting himself to monetise the living hell out of the user base by frogstepping a global creative user base into perpetual rental.
at the three minute mark, when the question is put to Shantanyu Narayen about why he is unwilling to continue parallel licenses to customers who make their living on the software, as many others are currently doing – simply using a carrot – his reply is actually kind of incredibly disingenuous
“Well Emily if we could do all things for all customers we would, this was all about saying, are we going to lead the industry.”
Which customers do not want to continue owning software they have paid for? And when he says lead the industry – who is he talking to? It feels quite machismo this – it feels like a CEO wanting to make a forceful statement that he is a killer CEO that should be respected. That he is a successful aggressive CEO. Its notable that even Microsoft, that have dipped their toes into subscription, have basically disowned his strong arm tactics.
Does anyone actually believe that the Adobe CEO is acting from a core belief in best practise for creative professionals? By making everyone rent the software, and throwing anything Adobe has ever made in their face to justify the decision? Part of me is surprised he didn’t throw Aldus pagemaker into the mix, it could be the equivalent of an unpopular food shopping channel.
If adobe really tried to dig out everything they ever owned, I’m sure they could get the cloud application count into three figures.

yeah, thats not bad at all – That’s AE, PPRo, and PS for me. Thats all I use 95% of the time. 20 dollars would be the equivalent of .99 tracks in itunes. And you’d still feel the urge to get your hands on speed grade and audition and that – the master collection still has a very strong come hither – its just, coming from production premium particularly in the EU – its actually a worse deal.
If anything was going to retard piracy and drive very large adoption, it would be tiered offerings like that.

Not really no, it hasn’t been there all the time. 6 was the first time they included a save as 5.5 – but to be specific – for whatever reason, adobe after effects wasn’t on the adobe published list of applications with CC reverse compatibility to CS6. That came up in another conversation.

It’s really not a cash issue chris – it’s how much of my toolset I’m willing to lose basic control over. PPro is it.
I am not walking an inch into the rest of the adobe rental show. not with CS6 in hand?
– ask me again in two years when we see whether adobe actually did hit an update brick wall. CS6 is killer and i own it.But most of the stuff in it is ver. 12 -15 and ten to thirty years old for gods sake. Adobe might be getting tired of this?
Left on the open market a lot of this might be supposed to die? I mean that in the best way possible. part of me thinks they never recovered from how stupid everything got about flash.you might think adobe corporate threw everything they had at CS6-7 to get at a working rental landlord steady state.
I almost think adobe really are at a point where they just want to pick up a rent payment –– and fire a lot of people internally, and kill a lot of R&D.

adobe are formally guaranteeing live download access to up to three or so CS versions prior. you’ve got them all. they really are throwing the kitchen sink in that sense.

OK fair enough, bar that being me posting a random year old post. It gets tricky when you are mindlessly ranting in multiple locations – but let me try it this way:
We, you, the lot of us, are considering ending the ability to formally purchase, and own, our pay the bills software here right? The pay the bills software becomes a rent payment itself? Adobe are asking us to rent our tools off them.
We are considering going on rental – so adobe are waving a ton of stuff, but really, if you think about it, it all builds up to this request for a monthly rental cheque: them buying behance, getting Kuler going, cobbling some cloud collaboration for still images (you cannot share video files in their system actually) – but those are the trappings for this thing they want us to focus on – some kind of amazingly enhanced relationship we are all about to engage with – with adobe, under Shantanyu Nayaren.
There is something close to basecamp for collaboration, a sophisticated portfolio scheme to allow us all to share our work in a meritocratic community like behance – although thats mostly print really and they don’t have much presence in moving image.
We also get access to really amazing colour wheel technology – there are just the coolest videos of super inspired photographers pulling up their CC account colour schemes in Kuler. They aso have some stupid pens that don’t draw on paper – those are CC pens.
This, without tin foil hat right? this is a very concerted push to surround a basic proposition – that you do not own the software you use, that you can no longer buy it, with a ton of tinsel, first year deals, portfolio site something, 20GB of storage no one really cares about etc.
so right at the back OK – someone is saying that you don’t need to own this stuff. That that is outdated – tool ownership is obselete! and renting has truly incredible benefits. because these guys are right there with you. right. So here is Shantanyu Nayaren:

so when I say that I don’t trust Shantanyu Nayaren, I mean, I don’t trust him. You are looking at a guy who was effectively financially raping Australian customers, then replying by saying, you should really trust us because of what we are about to do to you once you agree to become rental tenants of our software.
Fine – someone is going to say “if you don’t like it you can leave.” To a reasonable degree as editors we really can. But there are near monopoly parts of the suite. And I’m more than a little sucked in with AE and PS – but, you know, up yours Shantanyu – I have CS6.basically I think adobe make stunning software at times, but the idea that any of us should be comfortable with the notion of becoming people who pay them rent for tools we require to make a living – to walk into that dynamic? does anyone really want to get into that?
bar PPro 7 – does anyone here care about the new features in illustrator, or indesign, or flash, or edge create, or reflow, or edge animate, or digital publishing system, or brackets, or edge inspect? (seriously some of that stuff is cool, watch the web walkthroughs) but why in the name of JESUS – am i paying rent for those rooms/software anyway? they have absolutely nothing to do with me
Why am I paying rent on every piece of software adobe ever made?
I would – personally – just like to upgrade my license for Production Premium 6.

actually – its a little more – I’ve thought about that. I get a discount on single app coming from CS3 and above that dips below the discount I get on the suite coming from CS6.
My real point is that I am not willing to start executing AE in CC. PS has granite backwards compatibility. And I’ll rent PPro – but there is just no way I’m going to get acclimatised to perpetual rent for adobe software. Seriously Chris -look at this guy:

are you willing to transition to a rental scheme where this guy is calling the rent? I’m not calling doomsday – but – on a near animal level – I don’t trust where adobe are inclined to take this once everyone is paying them rent. I just do not trust the landlord.
As much as anything, I fundamentally don’t trust Shantanyu Nararyan.
