    Note that if you use 16 bpc in ACR, you should have every piece of data available (plus headroom) to use AE’s Exposure effect, for example.

    Yes, “desktop display” and “video desktop” are the same thing.
    So, just to make sure, go to System Preferences > Displays and check the “Show displays in menu bar” button. Now, go to the display button at the upper right corner and click it. Does it show more than one display there? If so, the desktop display could be interfering.

    As a troubleshooting step, remove the AJA card, boot the system, try RAM preview in AE. Does it work well? If no, put the AJA card in again.

    There are a few things that can impact RAM preview playback performance, but frankly your computer is so powerful, it should keep up easily.
    So, here are a few things:

    • A mismatch between Comp resolution/frame rate and RAM preview settings (you already checked that, but it’s important enough to double check).
    • Having video preview enabled in Preferences > Video Preview.
    • Having Color Management/Device simulation turned on.
    • Having the PAR preview button turned on at the bottom of the Comp panel.

    As I said, a modern computer should be able to keep up even with these things.
    This is almost as frustrating for me as it is for you, since diagnosing these things remotely is very difficult and it’s probably something more or less obvious 🙁

    In CS4, you can encode an AE comp directly to H264 with 2 Pass VBR by using Adobe Media Encoder in standalone mode. You don’t even need to render an intermediate file. Launch AME and open the AE comp through Dynamic Link, pick you H264 encoding options and submit. So it’s only a couple of additional steps, and you get background encoding of your AE comp to H264 or other format, with more advanced encoding options. Of course, you can render an intermediate file and use that in AME if you prefer.

    Encore should be able to do 2 pass VBR encoding to H264 fron a Dynamic Link Comp without problems. If it doesn’t, make sure you send a bug report to the Encore team:

    For CS3, that would be true.
    In CS4, you can use the Adobe Media Encoder in standalone mode and you’ll get access to all FLV encoding options (including 2 pass VBR encoding). Still, a large file is probably more a consequence of not picking a web delivery preset to begin with. Make sure you do that, Alakar.

    Brian: Your octo-core computer should play back a RAM Preview for 1080 comp at full resolution and full frame rate very easily. And without skipping frames at al. Machines way less powerful can do that.
    So there’s something getting in the middle.
    As I said in another post, the “video desktop” feaute in some AJA and Decklink cards make the card appear to the system as if it was a display card, and this can cause extremely slow performance. So, check the AJA control panel and see if this could be the case.
    I also recommend re-creating the preferences, in case there’s any odd setting preventing you from getting proper real time playback of RAM previews.

    To re-create the prefs, quit AE and go to username/library/preferences/Adobe/After Effects/9.0

    You want to rename the file called “Adobe After Effects 9.0 Prefs” to something like “Adobe After Effects 9.0 Prefs.old”, for example.

    Next time you launch AE, it will create fresh preferences.

    Again, the kind of content or the complexity of the features doesn’t affect RAM preview playback. That’s why you build a RAM preview 🙂

    Brian, you can get full frame rate RAM previews on computers with a fraction of the power. No need to skip frames. So there’s something not set up properly. Does the AJA have a video desktop? I don’t mean the video preview feature in AE, but some of this cards allow you to send a second desktop to a video monitor. Make sure this is turned off. Of course, I am just trying to guess.

    Nicolas: Video transitions as they exist in an editing application like Premiere are not typical in a compositing application like After Effects. Como think of it, After Effects uses a layer-based model, so clips (layers) do not live in a common track (which is key to the concept of “transition”). Because of this, AE can’t support most of transitions Premiere has when importing a Premiere Pro project. Only the cross-dissolve transition is supported. For other transitions, AE creates a solid layer with the same duration as the PPro transition.

    As for your other question, Premiere Pro has many of AE’s effects already built-in, but others are not.

    Just to clarify a bit more: the Collapse transformations switch is not strictly related to keeping resolution or preserving 3D transformations, although of course it does both.

    You can think of it as connecting with cables each property in the Pre-Comp with the same properties for all layers nested inside the Pre-Comp.

    A non-collapsed Comp appears to the parent Composition as a baked thing, as if it was rendered video. When collapsed, there’s kind of a live link between the external properties and the internal ones.

    Because of this, for example, blend modes in a collapsed comp interact with layers below the Pre-Comp in the parent Compostion. Also, the content of the Pre-Comp is not clipped to the boundatries of the Pre-Comp’s frame.

    The reason why resolution is preserved is, again, that the transformations are combined. For example, if you have inside the Pre-Comp a layer scaled down to 25 per cent, and then in the Pre-Comp you scale it up 200 per cent, both transformations are connected to produce the same result as scaling down 50 per cent. In other words, the Pre-Comp is aware of the scale value for the layers nested inside. Same for other properties. And that’s why a Collapsed 3D Pre-Comp also keeps the “3Dness” of it all.

    This shouldn’t affect RAM preview playback, since once a preview it’s built, it’s uncompressed video.

    I think the problem is very likely that your RAM preview resolution settings don’t match the Comp. Is the RAM preview resolution and frame set to auto, or resolution specifically to quarter? Anything else would produce a mismatch, which is what you want to avoid.
