i’m pretty sure you cant upgrade the graphics in a mac laptop as the chips are part of the motherboard. Thats how they can make em so thin these days.

However, the i7 models fly along. I have a 17″ i7 and its never felt like graphics were giving it a hard time.Just make sure that you switch the auto graphics switching off (its in one of the energy saving preferences in the system preferences. That will force the laptop use the higher quality graphics chip (as it has two separate ones!)

Maybe i was wrong!
I also have a Z1 and everytime i tried to edit in its native format using the HDV Pal settings i had to render constantly. Now if i ever need to ingest from HDV I immediately convert to Prores to avoid the problems.

Another thought has just sprung to mind – how full are your hard drives? If they have anything less than 10% available, then that could also cause major slowdowns.

And please tell me you are not using the laptops internal hard drive for storing your video media on.

check the About this Mac, More Info under your menubar Apple con. Then go to Memory and it will tell you what ram you have in each slot.

If one is empty you can try add another of equal specs, bear in mind the recommended procedure is to have matched pairs of chips. If they are both full, then you will need to buy 2x4gb ram chips and replace the existing ones.

the problem could be that you have applied BadTV to HDV footage. So as well as having to render the effect, its also having to render the video first, as HDV is not a good format to be editing in.

its called “stop frame animation” – its not software driven, its an in-camera effect created by shooting sequences of thousands of still frames, and moving slightly between each frame.
Thats how you get her clothing to be animated as well as her hair.
It also helps to photograph a pin sharp image on every frame without motion blur.

To replicate a similar effect in video, i would remove every other frame, and then duplicate every frame that is remaining. Traditional animation is often done using “doubles” ie, for every frame they shoot two images, which is what gives the animation its staccato appearance.

i remember years ago using a polarised light source together with a polarising filter on the lens to show stress patterns in Laboratory glass.

The lens would be rotated to 90degrees from the light source and then when the glassware was handled, the stress patterns were clearly visible through the camera.

Not quite the answer to your question, but its one worth dropping in the memory banks for another day!

just as a finish up to this post – using a Sony DVD recorder, i can play the discs (which are not HD but simply mini dvd-r discs). The Sony recorder will not allow me to finalize the discs, but i can still play them out through my Matrox MX02 and record the files to prores ready for burning to a standard dvd.

My friend was almost in tears when he saw the files on the disc do actually exist!

Thanks for the suggestion Tony – i probably would have never even thought of using the old dvd recorder!
