March 11, 2009 at 8:33 pm in reply to: framerate keeps coming out at 59.94p instead of 29.97[Mikael Kreuzriegler] “How can I shoot with this camera at 24p and cut at 29.97 (assuming that 5997 gives me 2x the file size which I want to avoid)?”
1) Record in 720-24pN (native) mode, there by creating a true 24p (with no pulldown) movie. Any other 720p format will follow HD 720p spec and pad out the selected frame rate to 60 (59.94).
2) If you must work with true 24p footage (or if storage space is really an issue), I’d shoot 24pN and work in a 24p timeline – then add pulldown to the final product on output via Kona or through Compressor.
If you just want the look of 24p, perhaps it’s easier to shoot and edit 720p24 in a 59.94 sequence.

If you connect the camera via USB or Firewire (with Firewire Device mode and with appropriate P2 drivers installed on the system) then the P2 cards will mount and you can copy the MXF folder structure to another drive, or import from the cards directly.
On my system, dragging the files off the P2 card is a VERY slow transfer… I’m not sure why. I use P2CMS to copy and catalog the footage, and it offloads the cards (with verify) probably five times faster than just dragging and dropping.

I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that the HPX-2000 did not do over/under cranking?

Like Greg said above, installing P2CMS will give you a quicktime MXF plug-in… then you should be able to import the video MXF files directly into FCP. You lose timecode, it ignores all metadata, and any audio clips would have to be imported and synced manually, but for video only it should work just fine.

I suppose I was hoping the sharpness of the newer VF would help, but wasn’t considering the SD feed. Ah well, not like I’ve got the extra cash to spend even if it did work!
Thanks for the replies.

While you could import directly into FCP I’d consider dumping the whole card and importing it later, seems safer and your metadata would remain intact.
If you were to offload directly from camera to an external firewire drive then you will need to have the camera format the drive the first time. Each card offloaded creates a new partition, but keep in mind there is a limit to the number of partitions (16?) that can be reached before you run out of disk space. Offloading for me takes around 20 mins per 16GB card, including verify time.
If you have a laptop with compatible slot (or a Dual Adapter) then offloading to a laptop is likely the best route – faster than coming from the camera, doesn’t tie up the camera, and with the ability to make dual backups.

[Noah Kadner] “Use the Remote Control, Luke.

The HPX-500 does not have a remote control like the HVX-200 does, so if you’re shooting on two ‘500s you won’t have any remotes. If you happen to be using a ‘200 as B-cam then you could roll it with that as you start the A-cam.
I don’t know of any means to press one button and roll both cameras, and you’ve locked TC already… I’d think that’s about the best you can do.

Could this be an OSX viewing preference?
I’m on an older OS here so I can’t check until later, but aren’t there options as to whether the finder shows thumbnails or generic icons?

To select a range in MPEG Streamclip, play the video or drag the slider to where you want your clip to start and press I (for In Point). Move to the spot where you want that clip to end and press O (Out Point).
You can now select Trim from the Edit menu to remove the unwanted portions of your video, and then Save As using a new name so you don’t ruin your original movie.

November 27, 2008 at 6:30 am in reply to: Corruption/dropout on all video files after using p2cmsYou may need to create a dummy database somewhere just to make P2CMS happy, but once you are in, the Database menu has an item “creation & modification” – try opening the database provided with the footage.
Another option would be to create a new database, and then ingest all the clips from the client-provided database. Note that this will take time and copy all the files to the new DB’s location. Then you can Export all the clips you desire and they will be placed in FCP-friendly format. Of course this option would be far less efficient but it should get the job done.
