Particle Playground does have the ability indeed. I delved into it after writing on the forum.

It can also be achieved with 3rd party plugins such as Newton, or Trapcode.
For my purposes, I am not sure, I have a couple of dozen shapes containing those ‘hit detection mini-shapes’

I have to admit i ended up with Gaussian Blur+Simple Choker on an adjustment Layer. with the right bounce expression I ended up with a nice animation!
