  • I can’t reproduce that error. Maybe one of the Vegas guru’s around here can help with that, or try searching for that error string on Google.

It turns out this very post is the only relevant place this error turns up in a Google search!

  • I just downloaded the trial of Vegas HD. You can render as WMV which allows you to customize all the settings on the Video tab:

When I try to change the WMV frame rate to 23.976, I get this error:

“The custom template you selected is not valid with the current project settings. It has been removed from the template list.”

But I obviously can’t set the project settings to 24p. Any idea how to get it to allow me to render with these settings?

  • Render it from Vegas as an uncompressed .avi or .mov, then encode it with Handbrake

So here I would be going from 24p->30p->24p, right? Does anyone know if this will actually result in the original frame rate as shot, or how to do so? I believe Handbrake is just an ffmpeg or mencoder wrapper. Are we talking about telecining and detelecining here, or something else?

  • Vegas Movie Studio HD 9 does not support 24p. Not in the project properties or rendering templates. You’ll need to upgrade to Vegas Pro if you want 24p support.

That’s too bad! Apparently I didn’t do enough diligence before buying HD 9. I’m really just a casual user so I can’t justify shelling out $500 for this one feature. Can anyone think of a workaround? For example, is there some high-quality/uncompressed format I could render to and then use mencoder or ffmpeg to convert to 24p? I’m a little hazy on what is set in the container versus codec versus elsewhere.
