October 8, 2024 at 7:27 am in reply to: Why are MP4 Files Very Slow to Load??

I’ve attached a 5 second test clip. If I try to open it in photoshop on mac it takes ages to load. It stalls or at least is very sluggish. On the ‘progress’ dialogue it says ‘reading video format’ whilst the progress bar moves very slowly. (attached screenshot)

However, on my PC the same file opens very quickly and playback is fine. My suspicion is that photoshop on mac doesn’t support video/codec the same way as PC – but I’m unsure.

I’m presenting from photoshop and it would be nice to get this working. Otherwise, I typically also use other softwares for video playback/editing.

    Any help greatly appreciated,

    Adam

Hi Hector, thanks so much for your detailed response – appreciate that. I’ve tried loading the mp4 from desktop to no avail and also converting to mov but neither worked unfortunately. As it runs smoothly on pc I feel it can only be something photoshop mac version related. As whatever codec was used to create the video is supported on pc version.

If you or anyone else has any other ideas I’d love to hear from you.

    Thanks again,

    Adam

Thanks for your message. Great, I’ll therefore stick with native export.

Do you know when direct MP4 export was introduced? Was it in 2023?

PS What is the 40bit preset? Is it the same as 40Mbps? Does this drastically increase file size? Is it noticably better quality?

Hiya, thanks for reply. This worked but couldn’t get ctrl + alt + / to open the import dialogue. This would be a neat replacement to ctrl + i if it automatically places the footage in the timeline.

Thanks Shahan, this worked as a replacement to drag & drop from project to timeline. ‘Create layers at composition start time’ must be unchecked in ‘preferences > general’ to place at current time.

I couldn’t get ctrl + / to actually open the import dialogue though. This would be a neat replacement to ctrl + i if it automatically places the footage in the timeline.

It’s set to 30 so hopefully it should be fixed to that. The bitrate is CBR. Which I think should make it fixed bitrate too? But not sure. I’ve just learnt that the file is corrupted at 1:31 and that is the only point in the video that fails on playback through windows media player. This is seemingly stopping it from being converted, transferred or edited. Is this a lost file do you think? Scrap it and re shoot? I’m unaware of any way of reviving it. Just a split second of the video is causing the issue. : |

I don’t seem to be able to convert it to any other format it seems. The file plays fine but it can’t be edited or converted – so it’s partially corrupted? Or perhaps you know of a workaround? I tried another online converter but it failed too. I may have to use another editing program like kinemaster perhaps to get this edited.

Unfortunately it crashed during export to ProRes. So some h264 clips are dodgy then? ah, good to know. Shame about that though. Here’s my OBS encoding options… attached. Which would you use for AE import?

    Thanks so much!
