Why are MP4 Files Very Slow to Load??
Posted by Adam China on September 22, 2024 at 5:53 pmHi, opening MP4’s works well on my PC but my M1 MacBook Air is very slow to load them.
They’re only small files/short clips (5secs) but take ages to load and playback is temperamental. This makes it unworkable.
I’m wondering if anyone might know why and what specs are required to load MP4’s into PS?
As it’s an M1 chip the laptop is decent/modern and I wouldn’t expect it to struggle with this. I’ve tried with both PS 2022 and 2024 but get the same result on my MacBook Air.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

September 23, 2024 at 6:54 pmHello Adam!
I do not think its an issue on your laptop at all, what I believe could be causing this issue is probably a missing codec that helps you run MP4 properly. I personally have not really run MP4 files on my Adobe Photoshop since its mainly a photo editing app and I deal with MP4 on Vegas Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.
I was looking up online and wanted to ask you if you tried moving the MP4 file to the desktop to see if it loads faster that way. Depending on the location of the MP4, it may take longer to load, so if its on an external hard drive or CD Drive for example, it will take longer to load since it has to get data from a removable device. Thats my theory at least.
If you can convert the video to another video file that photoshop supports like .MOV or .AVI for example. This link can give you more info on that: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/file-formats.html
And here is the link where I found other ppl with similiar issues as you that you can read on too to see if it can help you with your own solutions to try and see if they work:
Best of luck on this and hope to hear from you again soon! 🙂

October 5, 2024 at 11:29 amHi Hector, thanks so much for your detailed response – appreciate that. I’ve tried loading the mp4 from desktop to no avail and also converting to mov but neither worked unfortunately. As it runs smoothly on pc I feel it can only be something photoshop mac version related. As whatever codec was used to create the video is supported on pc version.
If you or anyone else has any other ideas I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks again,
Adam

October 7, 2024 at 3:16 pmThanks for your response. Perhaps if there is a way to record a video clip of you present the problem of you running it on Mac, I can try to research better on why this is going on. I pretty much always use Photoshop on PC at all time and do not work with MP4 videos on Photoshop, but on Vegas PRO or Premiere Pro. Hope to hear from you soon! 🙂

October 8, 2024 at 7:27 amI’ve attached a 5 second test clip. If I try to open it in photoshop on mac it takes ages to load. It stalls or at least is very sluggish. On the ‘progress’ dialogue it says ‘reading video format’ whilst the progress bar moves very slowly. (attached screenshot)
However, on my PC the same file opens very quickly and playback is fine. My suspicion is that photoshop on mac doesn’t support video/codec the same way as PC – but I’m unsure.
I’m presenting from photoshop and it would be nice to get this working. Otherwise, I typically also use other softwares for video playback/editing.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Adam

October 10, 2024 at 2:40 pmI found someone on the Adobe forums that seems to have a similiar problem to you and it seems that on Mac, it seems to barely support MP4 formats.
Here is the link for more info: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/photoshop-on-macbook-pro-m1-chip-won-t-open-mp4-files/td-p/12790697
I never used Photoshop on a Mac so I cannot confirm that for a fact but this is why I prefer using Windows for this stuff. Hope it helps!

Photoshop on MacBook Pro M1 chip won't open .mp4 files
Hi! I'm facing a problem with opening an .mp4 file in Photoshop on my new MacBook M1 Pro. I already tried giving PS full accesibility and full disc access. I also tried opening Intel version. Unfortunately nothing works. The video … Continue reading
