October 4, 2007 at 6:25 pm in reply to: Going to buy a Mac Pro… what configuration?

[marcbrak] “Sorry for rambling on, but it’s a real dilemma. Go for a $10.000 Mac pro i’m not really ready for, or settle for a mac book pro that will allow me to familiarize with the mac and fcp, but is too light-weight for real heavy editing…”

If you are stable enough on you Premier system this is a very good option as well. And you get alot of versatilty with this. A MBP would probably be a very good teaching tool, and catch you up on the curve, and when it comes time to go and get that 10g HD editing comp, you will be good to go. It’s one thing if you were in a situation and aski “I’ve been hired on to cut this hdcam footage they need uncompressed 4:4:4, with grading, I wont be working with more than 5 hours of footage at a time, and I need it in a week with budget of $x what should I do for set up” This is a clear cut setup, with limited choices and options.

I have a quad 3.0 (which is in desperate need of more ram) And I work (as stated) with alot of dvcpro hd footage, and pro res stuff, I have no need to expand past my internal drives and a few firewires for transport. I’m also very happy with the results I’ve had. Then again I cut my teeth for 18 months or so on a powerbook g4, learned FCP there and on some other resources. A quad would be fine, and as is said time and time again, If business is good enough to afford you Uncompressed HD footage, It’s probably good enough for that new comp. You should be fine for now, on either a quad of a MBP. And cut your teeth on fcp. A quad is still extremly upgradeable. Lots of room for storage, ram, cards, etc.

what do i do? Maybe i SHOULD get some drinks with Walt and Zander…”

The only problem I see, is Walt and I are kind of on opposite sides of the continent. I do have a bunch of free miles, with 0 free time…Damn expirations.

[marcbrak] “Right, and to capture uncompressed HD, i will need a special capture card?”

Yes something like the Kona 3 would be what you would want

    [marcbrak]
So that would mean for the time being i could postpone buying a RAID rack + capture card, and just go for that octo-core macpro with enough RAM.”

yes currently I don’t work with alot of uncompressed media, I just use a lot of dvcpro hd captured via FW. Along with all 4 internal bays filled up and a drive in my optical bay as well (who needs two burners?) Ram will go along way with helping you out. Save some of that money for the future for what ever you find yourself needing. either that, or you can take Walt and myself out for a few drinks every now and than, over time you’ll end up with less equipment, but more stories.

October 2, 2007 at 6:34 pm in reply to: Scribble effect “To The MAX!!!!”

[Antony Buonomo] “Stroke or 3D Stroke then Roughen Edges and/or a Fractal Noise overlay will help; I did a similar thing recently”

the problem with this is the stroke has to constantly be animated (like the scribble effect) other wise this idea would work nicely and would save me alot of time and grief. As it is, I for see trouble creating this.

October 2, 2007 at 2:55 pm in reply to: HVX Greenscreen is looking noisy

I’ve keyed a lot of hvx footage (several student projects, some test work, and some doc stuff) and ALL of it was noisy to start for the most part. Alot of this comes with sing certain setups with the hvx, and though it may not be very visible at first, when even the slightest color change is made, or effect is added, it jumps right out. So to start just be cautious of that.

second, I find alot of times key light has some of the preset screen gain set to high with HD footage. noticed this on several formats i’ve used keylight with including the HVX. though not always an issue, ive found turning screan gain down a bit to start and bringing it back up helps (note not bringing it back to default just to the point of acceptable key)

    hope this helps

that strange bizzarr connection is this thing they used to use back in the day, called IDE, I think if you go to the proper antique store you can find a drive to fit here. My boss installed one the other day in under 5 minutes (not counting shut down)

Yea I hate when your forced to be the guy that says

“Uh boss, Can’t be done, and you need to call that guy back”

On a side note, Please make sure your boss understands this isn’t your fault. My friend just lost a job do to a mis understanding like this. And as a recen college grad, this really hurts. But than again do you really want to be in a place that’s like that?

September 21, 2007 at 1:14 am in reply to: A thank you to Creative cow and Andrew Kramer

I would like to second this.

I learned started learning AE a week after Aharon’s original old tv video tutorial came out. And when Andrew Kramer was working with wedding photographs instead of working around his Wedding.

I help teach an After Effects basics class now, and have directed everyone to here and AE basics over at Andrew’s site. And to little suprise, they were all amazed by how easy he makes everything look. I’ve had maybe 2 people who needed help today, instead of 15 or 20, And I think the cow/copilot have something to do with this

    Thanks Alot guys!

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/kramer_andrew/proxies.php

start in proxies, it will save you time, energy and patience. I worked with a 2k a little bit ago on a (shudder) 12 inch powerbook g4. If it wasn’t for proxies. I don’t think that laptop would be sitting next to me right now.

what i would do is this

Using the liquify filter, move one from behind the other, assuming the first (original one) stays still (and it doesn’t have to move while shooting though you can move them, centering the split as they go). Use the liquify filter to stich them over. If you are having issues of being able to see on through the other. Shoot a plate, as well and mask it off (once again assuming it doesnt move)
