    Hello

I’ve embarked on my first attempts at greenscreen and I’ve been playing around with After Effects and Keylight today. However I’m noticing that the Keylight (and the other AE keyers) add an awful lot of noise to the images.

    I’ve uploaded a sample at greenscreen.mov

The three shots in the file are:

    1) Green screen raw footage
    2) Background plate
    3) Keylight Composite

Does anyone have any suggestions for things I could try to resolve the noise issue?

    Thanks

okay, in keylight, just try previewing the screen matte. It appears that maybe you’ve cranked the screen gain too high.

You could also try applying some screen pre-blur before you do the key.

malcolm is prolly right dont overkill your keylighting make sure u have transparent up instead of the black background, so u know just when to stop keying .also your back ground footage looks to “pretty” and kinda fake

you should really check out andrews kramers https://www.videocopilot.net/

he has the perfect tutorial for green screening in a car . might be in the basic tutorials section .. i got it on the serious fx dvd . but i think he has it on the free basic training section .

Yeah, that kramer tutorial is great. It’s basically adding a glass reflection in the fore ground. Usually does the trick.

Also, you might want to try using a white BG when keying. It’s up to you though.

    Best O’ luck!

    Thanks for the quick replies!

I’ve tried to apply those techniques and I can now see that I was applying a very heavy matte (a solid white block foreground and solid black background).

If I simply apply a key to the image it does a great job but their is then some transparency in the face and shirt (i can see the transparency grid through the image) As soon as I tweak the “Clip White” setting even a minor point it brings the noise into the image?

I was thinking of creating a matte using auto-trace and then applying it to a seperate layer and then blending them together is that something that is commonly done?

This is a real learning curve! Thanks again for taking the time to help me with this.

    that coud help.

You might want to play with the key settings a little more as well.

I’ve keyed a lot of hvx footage (several student projects, some test work, and some doc stuff) and ALL of it was noisy to start for the most part. Alot of this comes with sing certain setups with the hvx, and though it may not be very visible at first, when even the slightest color change is made, or effect is added, it jumps right out. So to start just be cautious of that.

second, I find alot of times key light has some of the preset screen gain set to high with HD footage. noticed this on several formats i’ve used keylight with including the HVX. though not always an issue, ive found turning screan gain down a bit to start and bringing it back up helps (note not bringing it back to default just to the point of acceptable key)

    hope this helps
