  • X99 and a 5930k would be better than a Skylake based system. Mainly due to the board design having 4 channels of memory interfacing.

    Buy a motherboard that has the least DPC scores, there is a benchmark for this on Anandtech. Low DPC will make a difference for smooth operation/playback.

    Max out out AMD GPU with most “Compute Units” not stream processors you can afford. That would pretty much mean an XT Class GPU chip with the R9-Fury X still being the superior card for 8-bit video work. The newer RX card have pretty much less everything, memory bandwidth, and GFLOP performance being the main things. W9100 if you want 10bit display abilities.

    Get 32 or 64GB of RAM, and make sure to get the density of DIMMs to fill only the dual channel interfaces on the board. For an X99, that would be like 4 DIMM modules.

    Get an NVMe M.2 for Boot

    Get a PCIe based NVME SSD Card for project work, and use spinning disks only for project holding space. Put the PCIe SSD in the slots that hang off the CPU and not the X99 bridge.

    Convert camera high compression media to an intermediate format like Cineform, Prores, X-AVC-Intra, HDCAM, or XDCAM (for HD) The camera original formats have a large over head to decompress, and put together the group of pictures back into sequence.

    Skylake is not the best at the moment, and we are still waiting on the x99 class board and chip for the Gen6 or 7 CPUs that compare in design.

  • Your frame rate is 29.872 fps, while some players will compensate for this error, Vegas is more accurate and does not. I would try and figure out why your camera is shooting at this non standard frame rate. Is it by error, or design?

  • “I am using Vegas Pro 13 build 310,” this is not the latest build of Vegas 13. You may want to try the Vegas 14 demo to see if this is corrected.

    You may also want to convert the GoPro footage to cineform.avi as an edit intermediary format. Cineform is highly optimized for editing in Vegas, much more so than the AVC format that GoPro records in.

    Since the system is brand new, I would run the latest Memtest86+and make sure you have Zero errors in your memory architecture.

    Then verify that the GPU is the correct PCI slot in the mother board. Uninstall the GPU drivers getting back to the windows driver, and reboot before moving card if needed.

    Verify OpenCL operation with Luxmark benchmark, or some XDCAM encoded material with a Min/Max effect applied or heavy GBlur. “AMD system monitor”, separate download, will show the GPU in use during timeline playback.

  • I second what John is saying.

    Also make sure to set Ripple Edit to ALL TRACKS, I think the default is not. Then learn the keyboard short cut to ripple end, and toggle it on only when needed.

    Because Vegas 13 timeline effects operate in a very similar way to Luxmark’s rendering engine utilizes compute resources. Luxmark ranking generally offers a good view as to cards that will be best for Vegas.

    The latest version of Luxmark’s render engine looks to have the NV1080 coming out way head of the Fury X, this may not mean that the 1080 will perform well in Vegas. Scores using the Luxmark engine 2.0 would be better scores to consider, since Vegas has not been updated in a long while. NV has been caught repairing benchmark operation for marketing reasons. Someone would have to test Vegas on the NV1080 then report the results. Anandtech has dropped Vegas as test benchmark since Magix bought the the software.

    I would try the Match Media button in the project settings.

    Then in the Render As window, check the = box and use a Sony AVC profile that is equal to your timeline format.

    See if that improves things.

    Reset the Vegas Ram Preview to default in preferences, if you are referring to making this 6GB in vegas.

    Check out “media info,” its an app. Then verify that shadowplay is recording a standard constant frame rate that is 29.97 or 59.94.

    I have found that XSplit records in a constant frame rate mode, and is very similar to OBS.

    Generally you do not want to mix GPU manufacturer drivers on the same system.

    You are sharing bandwidth 3 ways for a Z97 chipset designed to run a single GPU.

    The NV780 are about on par with the 6970 in terms of OpenCL performance. See the review below and note the Luxmark 2.0 ranking, as Luxmark operates in a very similar fashion to the way Vegas 13 handles compute.

    You will not get a benefit from what you are trying to do with MC encoder. Sony AVC will benefit more from the OpenCL timeline acceleration, if you have effects that require it. Straight cuts only material will likely not see much if any GPU acceleration. For snipping the ends of gaming material, you would be better off learning FFMPEG and setting your IN/OUT.

    I would uninstall the NV GPU driver software, then shutdown and pull the GPUs. Then verify the AMD drivers are at the latest version. Vegas will function much better running on the AMD card alone.

    Also with the chip set you have purchased, you only really get one 16x slot to run a GPU optimally. You always want your GPU running at 16x, and 16x PCI3.0 if possible.

    If you really need the 780 for gaming reasons, build a dedicated Vegas Workstation and network them.

    More memory in a system is never overkill, especially with apps like Photoshop and Vegas too. More system memory means more available cache, and it will always be faster when rendering to pull from cache than making a call to storage.

    I would go with 32GB of ram. Make sure you run a full MemTest86+ series on it when you get the machine, to check for 100% zero errors.

    If NVME option is available go with that as well, but check the motherboard for how it supports this as it may steal lanes from the GPU.

    Personally, you should go with the best X series AMD card that you can afford. There have been other posts that list the X series cards in order.
