try 4 Instances – it’s been shown to be the best combo for an 8 core machine. Each instance uses 2GB RAM and 2 procs.

We tried to do a 5m copper run… and it seemed to work 90% of the time, but then 10% of the time we’d get all sorts of weirdness on that particular station.
Go fiber optic. it works beautiful. You’ll need a fiber cable with LC/Duplex ends and a pair of SFP transcievers (Finistar makes all that I’ve ever used)

Amen. This is a plague that has come and gone for years. I know the After Effects forum has gone up in flames before with people beating their heads against the gamma wall. And there’s NO REAL SOLUTION.
I personally try to work in only codecs that don’t get hammered by gamma changes. Uncompressed or ProRes have been good. DVCPRO-50 and HD are just unbearable. Frankly I gave up because it’s been an issue for what, 6 years now? Funny enough something they AREN’T a problem for months on end… and then one day you render and everything’s off again.

FCP has a terrible re-sizing algorithm. Those 6 extra pixels/lines get murdered in FCP when you drop them in.
You’re best bet to to render all your graphics meant for a 480 timeline at 480. Or use Compressor (or QT, or Shake, or etc…) to resize them to 480 and crop off 3 lines from the top and bottom.

meh. It’s almost inevitable Apple will introduce a new Final Cut this year (most likely around NAB time). It’s been what, 2 years since version 6?
And then it won’t actually ship till November.
And whoever is an early adopter will have a frustrating December with technical problems and we’ll fill up the Cow with our attempts to make it work.
Then maybe by January we’ll have a .1 fix.
So almost a year from now Final Cut 7 will be production ready?

I had a similar problem with a film trailer I did in 1080 uncompressed. I ended up compositing the titles in After Effects and applying a very delicate soft edge to the red graphics – it helped keep them from “stair-stepping” on the edges so drastically.
I think FCP had a soft edge filter of some sort? Or even just apply a .5 gaussian blur to the graphics and see if it helps.
Also if their logo is REALLY bright red, use a color corrector to bring it back a little. Sometimes what looks good CMYK on printed paper needs to be toned down for TV.

DVD is 4:2:0 colorspace. In essence any red pixel gets “spread” across 4 pixels horizontally (not exactly the technical reason, but this is pretty much what you see). Red graphics look BAD. Watch the credits for “Dawn of the Dead” and you see they had the same problem.

They really should just throw DisplayPort to DVI adapter in with the box. Opening it up and not being able to connect your 2 perfectly good DVI monitors to it is a shame. Especially if you have 2×30″. $99 just to hook up your monitor? ouch.

No big fanfare because it’s only a mild upgrade on the boxes.
which is good because we just upgraded 2 G5 stations to 8 cores not more than 4 weeks ago 🙂
initially the i7 chip won’t seem faster at all. from what I understand it’s more optimized for processing large amounts of math: i.e. it’ll render HD video like gangbusters. But until Apple optimizes FCP for modern processors and multi-core I don’t think you’ll see much improvement in FCP.
Heck once multi-core aware FCP comes, all our MacPro’s will get a big boost of new life.
that stupid Display Port reminds me of the ADC days. Ugh.

Couple things
1) so you’re monitoring your digitbeta with an LCD hooked up with SDI/HDMI converter? The converter is suspect… I’ve seen “sparkles” with an HDMI converter myself. Typically it was due to illegal video levels freaking the converter out.
2) is your deck in “input video” reference?
3) are you recording audio over the SDI line or AES?
