I agree with Noah. I’ve had some pretty good results with his latter suggestion. Couldn’t afford to rent the phantom or RED. Here is a result of shooting at 720p30 overcranked to 60fps.
This was shot with the EX3. Post done in After Effects with ReVisionFX’s Twixtor Pro plug-in. The first clip was slowed to 5% of original then ramped to 100% which was actually 50% of real time. The second clip was sped up to 100% real time, then ramped in Twixtor to 5%, then ramped back up to 100% real time.
The results were decent. Having said that, people dealing in video can tell the difference but those subtleties would go unnoticed to the untrained eye. Before shooting I would do tests as shutter speed, aperture, and other factors will affect your end result.

Daniel, I use the XDCAM Transfer application, instead of the Log & Transfer within FCP.
When I first started using the EX series I used the Log & Transfer and it started failing me, as in it would freeze, or just wouldn’t render the footage. I downloaded XDCAM Transfer and it has worked flawlessly for me. Although I hear that the Log & Transfer within FCP is much better now. I’ve yet to use it since upgrading to FCS 3.
In XDCAM Transfer all you have to do is select the clip(s) you want to render, and click on ‘import’. Thats it. Make sure you set where the clips are imported in the preferences and you’re good to go. Hope this helps.

I’ve got both cameras, the flexibility of the EX3 will appeal to some because they want the ability to change lenses. Having that flexibility comes in handy for certain shots. Shots you could not get with the stock lens on EX1/3. Which camera suits you best? Thats the question you must ask. What do you shoot with the cameras? What are you using the camera for?
Marvin, I agree in that SONY really didn’t have to make the format proprietary. To anyone that says its tedious to work with, I disagree. The only step that it really requires is making the clip useful to FCP or whatever NLE you want. For example, an hour’s worth of footage from tape to computer takes an hour. For an hour’s worth of XDCAM EX footage it takes 5 mins to go from 16GB card to computer, then another maybe 5 mins to render and make useful. 10 mins vs 60 mins . . . not that bad . . .
And for those that have the Nano Flash (received mine yesterday, Thank you Dan Keaton-Convergent Design and Rick Kelly-Indie Group) recording at 100, 140, 160 mbps, the clips are native to XDCAM HD422 1080p30 CBR in FCP. And all you have to do is download from CF card to computer, drag the footage into FCP and you’re ready to go. Its a little box but it does BIG work.
Love the EX series!! Which ever camera you choose let us know how you like it!!

I completely agree. Having a feature like that would resolve a lot of headache!! Thank you for your help Michael. I actually thought of adding 1 marker at a time until a valid break point showed up, but thought there might be an easier solution. I didn’t know you could check the disc/volume to see the valid markers. That helps tremendously!!! Better than building and finding out every time I try to format!! BTW, found my break point and DVD burned just fine.
Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!

I always lav mic the officient, and the groom. If there is a podium and people are going to be reading scripture or speeches, that usually gets a lav as well. All of this goes wirelessly into my Edirol R-4 as 3 separate tracks which I add in post. On camera I usually have another receiver for the officient’s mic for backup.
The mics’ sensitivities are tweaked to my preference. If there is any unwanted talking during the ceremony, in post, I can just delete that section of whichever track and move on.
There’s no perfect solution for good audio, especially at a wedding. Money will have to be spent. Time will have to be spent. There’s no way around that. I’m using Sennheiser G2 100 series and have used them solidly for the last, going on 5 years now. The sensitivities are low but with the R-4 you can gain up as you’re recording but I usually duplicate the audio tracks multiple times in post. It comes out very, very clean with minimal background noise, and little or no echo.
As for reception audio, I typically tap into the DJ’s board through XLR, RCA, 1/4, or pretty much whatever he’s got available. As a videographer you have to be ready to be able to tap into anything and everything to get a clean feed. With a band its no different. Often times they have their own mixer that has an out you can tap into. Speakers are also a good source, but be careful with this one. Sometimes the DJ or band doesn’t modulate the audio and the feed will be too hot. Just have to monitor throughout the night or find a different source.
Hope this helps. I don’t like adding to my post workflow either, but in all honesty, its all about the end product and not how fast we can get the project out. Of course, that does help.

Hi Michael,
Sorry, I suppose I was trying to be too specific with the search. In any case, thank you for your help!
Michael, there are no valid chapters upon the build/format request. Because its such a tight fit, I’m assuming in order to find the close-to-exact 1/2 way point of all of the tracks on the DVD one would add up the size of all of the media and just add a bunch of chapter markers around that area to see which one shows up black in the build/format request?
Just confirming I would add up the tracks and menus in order according to the “by VTS” tab?
Michael, you’ve been a tremendous help! Thank you!

We use the Eartec system at every event and it works really well for us. Although they are full duplexing for 2 users with additional listen only remote packs, each user can full duplex as long as only 1 remote pack is talking at a time. This works fairly well until 1 remote leaves their ‘talk’ on. But you can tell when someone is trying to talk to the master pack, and in that case I just tell everyone to check their packs.
I am looking to upgrade to a full duplex system but again, those are up in the $3000 range. Portacom and Telex are the 2 brands I’m looking at.
Anyone know of a cheaper way to go 4-way full duplexing??

Okay, for those that are still reading this, I talked with Adobe, and After Effects 7.0 is not able to work with intel based macs which is why it can only render projects up to a certain length. Sorry for the post, just thought it might be easier to find an answer here or maybe someone here found a work around.
