Although not in the Palmer class of experts I can say that the BBC did an internal ‘paper’ on the EX cameras which they seemed to approve of with few reservations which leads one to assume that they come up to their standards.
As to a feature film I have recently had experience of observing the shooting of a feature on an EX3. They used Movie Tube to soften the image and prime 35 mm lenses to help with DOF.

Mastering out to a DVCAM deck with one of the DSR’s can be infuriating as there are so many combinations of settings to get right. I would bet that just one of these is not set right and it’s just a matter of going through them all again and again. Sometimes a setting changes when you re set another one. It’s all about the combinations generally. Of course you could have a technical fault and no amount of fiddling about will help that but generally it is a matter of fluking all the right settings.

I have just been working with a feature film unit in London doing the ‘making of’ film. I was using an EX1 but the main film was shot on an EX3 but with 35 mm lenses through a device known as Movie Tube. As many will know Movie Tube comes in various guises, some with a spinning ground glass screen, others with the screen static. The footage I’ve seen so far looks great and is film like in that the hard video edge is softened. I suspect that any feature unit using the EX 3 will use devices like these to give the much sought after ‘film look’.

Right Tim, I also have that hood and it’s the one I use most. True the expanded focus helps a lot but leaving it on messes up the framing so you can’t do that. I’m going to keep trying to find a way to utilise the EX3 view finder but it’s tricky.

May I ask you fellows for an opinion? I too use the EX1 and don’t want to go to the 3 BUT I have great problems with the screen in daylight. I have considered getting the EX3 ‘hood’ that fits over the screen as a spare part from Sony (£300!!!!) and somehow attaching it to the screen of the EX1. Has anyone tried this? It may well be cumbersome but as long as it can be fitted with easy to use clips of some sort I would like to give it a try. I have the ‘sock’ with a glass at the end that a guy in the States is marketing but it is a bit too floppy for critical focusing and is a real pig to fit and remove quickly. This focus problem for us ‘oldies’ on these new fangled screens is becoming serious. Old men didn’t used to make films, they do now but there are problems!
The EX1 is easier to handle than the EX3 but the big difference is that viewfinder as someone else has written on this thread.

I too edit my EX footage in HD with Media 100. I have down converted to SD both within Media 100 and BitVice and find very little difference in quality between the two. Possibly Media 100 slightly better because it’s done with hardware (HDx board) in the version I have. The new versions for the Intel chipped Mac G5’s can only do down conversion with software so probably slightly inferior to the BitVice down convert. I would have thought that the Matrox kit would do the best job. The very best I ever saw was with the HDCAM deck, but that costs £30,000 so you might expect that.

I can state with absolute certainty that from version 13 Media 100 DOES support the EX codec. I am currently cutting a film shot on my EX1 with Media 100. No problem, the Transfer tool allows me to select sub clips from the full clip and then import as a .Mov. Media 100 then renders it into the Media 100 HD codec. With reference to another thread I then have to adjust the panning of the audio as I get it in as left and right whereas I want both tracks as centre.
