You know what? On the cinema screen it all seems to look the same!
I recently had a ‘Making Of’ shown in a cinema with the main feature. I shot my docu on my EX1 at 1920 X 1080i, the feature was shot on an EX3 (with Movie Tube) at 1080 25P. I used some excerpts from the feature cut with my stuff and it all looked the same! Maybe the difference shows more on TV screens?

How many more times does Craig have to say this? Sony should be asked to print in very large letters (and maybe on a sticker by the card slots) a warning not to mess with the BPAV media files. This really is becoming a serious issue, particularly when a crew, probably used to using tape, gets to shoot with the EX cameras.

You’ll find that this might not be enough Gigs, you’d be surprised how quickly things fill up. I have a tiny PROAVIO DVBOX 320 Gbs, USB powered, Firewire 400/800 leather case cost £178. Probably not much more than the one you are thinking about. Great for dumping files on location.

Mark, Floh has covered the Media 100 queries (as always!) but if you try the BitVice application, which I love, then choose the VBR two pass option as you should get a better quality encode that way, the alternative is CBR one pass. It’s worth the extra time taken – certainly not real time!!!

Marten, why not take the files out as video directly on to your drives via the SDI output from the camera? This may not be the best route generally but it should get the stuff out that you are having problems with, especially as you state that the clips do play from the camera .

Only, I believe, converting HDV (1440 X 1080i) on the fly but I may be wrong. To convert HDV to 1920 X 1080 I used the Convergent Design HD-Connect on the fly but there must be a box to down convert also. Why don’t you leave it until you’ve completed your edit before down converting in Media 100? Or, better still, if you’re going to DVD let BitVice do it, that’s the best down convert of all in my humble opinion.

Alan, how does it beat BitVice? Better picture quality, faster encode, who makes it, how much more expensive, Mac cpmpatible? I’m so pleased with the quality I’m getting from the latest BitVice but obviously if there’s something better……….

Even better use Innobits BitVice for the encode, nothing will beat that for quality.

I have just seen a film I made with the EX1 on a big cinema screen. Although it was shot at 1080i, edited in HD (Media 100) the projection was from a Blu-Ray DVD. The cinema has an expensive new digital projector, a great technician and the picture looked great. It was the ‘Making Of’ a feature film and the main film was shot by a fantastic DOP on the EX3 using the Movie Tube at 1080P and that obviously looked great too. My picture though did not look all that different from the main one!!
