Problem might be fellows that Apple are about to announce a new machine next month? That’s the rumour around the UK. If an equipment upgrade is due (together with Media 100 Suite 1.1.3) do we crack straight on or do we have to wait for Media 100’s approval?

Ok OK I’m told off once again but I was being provocative. Even so I always try and use combinations of kit as manufacturers intend and they must have intended us to use the S x S cards. How come there’s been so many queries from other card users and very very few from users of Sx S ?

Sony made the EX cameras specifically to use their S x S cards for recording media. I would not dream of using anything else. You are spending thousands on the camera and other kit, not to mention post production facilities, why economise on the most important bit, the media? You don’t need many cards, downloading files is easy and fast, even on location.

These are elementary principles of photography which in these wondrous days of digital everything youngsters have never learned. As to depth of field the main points to bear in mind are:
The longer the focal length of the lens the less DOF
The wider the aperture the less DOFso, using the max tele end of your zoom lens, with the aperture open as wide as possible (smallest F number) will give you the narrowest DOF. In order to be able to open your aperture wide you may need to use the no 2 setting on the neutral density filter in your EX. That way your bride should be in focus and the background a blur!

Hey Rafa, I’m amazed to see what you say about Doug Jensen’s PP for the EX. He seems to be a very experienced cameraman and I followed his advice. I’ve never used personal PP’s before so was a bit in the dark. I’m not doing CK and my pics are good with Jensen’s settings (particularly daylight at 5600K), the contrast and colour look better than with the factory default which Jensen reckons are set neutral to await PP’s. I shoot with gain at -3 whenever possible. A suggested PP (wherever it differs from the default) would be appreciated.

But Craig, aren’t they just standard QT movie files now they have been converted by the Transfer software which should play in QT as stand alone movies?

Sorry Navarro, I also should have said that under the Matrix setting I also have the level set at +3 in addition to having High Sat on. I just looked at Doug Jensen’s Vortex Media EX workshop to check his suggested Picture Profile.

Navarro, for what it’s worth these are the settings I use following Doug Jensen’s video. This is for daylight with a Kelvin setting of 5600. I’m not talking about chromo work or anything very clever, just normal HD video. Film making is hard enough without complicating things – it’s what you are doing with your images that matters. I would stress that there are very many on this forum (most) who are far better than I on technical matters.
The changes I made to the factory settings are:
Matrix: High Sat
Gamma: Cine 4
Black:-3
Black Gamma:-2and where possible I have the gain at -3 in common with most people. I have noticed however that there seems to be no obvious increase in ‘noise’ if I have to increase the gain even up to +9. I don’t understand why you are getting noise providing you are manually setting gain, shutter and aperture, these cameras are giving us brilliant images.
