Why a PC for BD? Even if I encode through using H264 in Compressor and burn in Toast surely this can be done on a Mac?

Eric, do you think that BitVice will soon be doing a BD encoding? The only way at present seems to be H264 in Compressor then burn with Toast 10.

Why are you fellows so keen on Compressor, how do you think it compares with BitVice. Great SD DVD’s from HD.

No contest in my humble opinion. Got to go HD. I still output to SD DVD’s but the resultant downscaled picture is still better than my stuff of five years ago shot DVCAM on a DSR 300. As someone else wrote the new cameras are better with larger chips (sensors) in the main and better low light performance. Post has presented no real problems provided you work in ProRes HQ which gives great pictures but not needing multi TB’s storage. I’ve seen my recent stuff in cinemas on a huge screen played in a BD player most of which have upscaling built in.
Sure you can get by shooting SD as long as it’s in 16:9 aspect but not I fear for too much longer. I feel things are moving faster here in Europe than America which, historically, is unusual.
But of course, as ever CONTENT IS ALL.

I’m in PAL country so the dimensions are different. I’m not quite sure of your work flow but all I was doing was to guide you to BitVice which I consider to be the best encoder available to us apart from the multi thousand Hollywood encoders. There are many variables that you may have got wrong and there are experts on this forum far better than me to advise. I was disappointed at first with my DVD’s, especially after the quality of tape masters but gradually I refined the process and new versions of BitVice and Toast helped.

Stephanie, I don’t edit with Final Cut, I’m on Media 100 but what I do is export the finished film as a Quick Time .Mov then drag into BitVice and make all the various settings and end up with the M2V and ac3 files for importing into Studio Pro for building and formatting. I don’t go near Compressor as I burn the .img I get from Studio Pro in Toast (version 10).

Stephanie, try the encoding software BitVice. It’s fantastic and does a supurb downscale from HD to SD as well as encoding your M2V and ac3 (audio) files. I use no other and am very happy with my DVD’s from original camera files on S x S cards in the EX1.

I’m just late in on this thread but it seems to me that the original question related to compression for an SD DVD.
The Compressor software was mentioned. Well, I find I get a much better DVD by using BitVice. The latest version also prepares your ac3 audio file and the quality of downscale from HD (assuming that the shoot was in HD) is very good. You can choose whether you compress using CBR or VBR and of course you can choose the bit rates. Our original poster merely let it all happen automatically and, as pointed out by a subsequent poster, this is not going to get you the best quality DVD. BitVice forever I suggest and here’s hoping they will announce a BD version soon!

Craig, do you have any guide as to pricing? Let’s say the basic but with a decent viewfinder, nearest thousand would do.

Mark, I too need SD DVD’s from my HD timeline and I have found that by far the best down convert is with the Innobits BitVice encoding software. Their latest versions are stunning and very easy to use.
