Jerry, by far the easiest path to BD is by exporting your HD file to a QT .mov then opening up Titanium Toast (version 10 WITH BD Plug-in) and dragging your file in. Toast does a good BD encode and then will burn to a BD disc. You do obviously have to have a stand alone BD burner attached to your computer for this. No need to even think about Studio Pro.

Thanks Danny, I thought so. I import my XDCAM HD footage as Apple ProRes HQ and edit in that codec. It is so good that this is a widespread practice in that very little quality is lost and the saving in drive space immense.

Many thanks Daniel, I can see where to drag to in Purifier but what do I drag? Presumably I first of all have to export my HD timeline from the edit (in my case from Media 100). I normally export as a QT .mov in Apple ProRes HQ 422. Am I right in this? What sort of file to I get back?

Daniel, thanks for that but how do you use Purifier just for downscaling ? I know you can clean up an image using it within BitVice but what about as a stand alone application? I have it installed on my edit MacPro. When I open Purifier how do I go about downscaling an HD timeline? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Daniel, really interesting what you say about Purifier. I was advised to use it sparingly when encoding with BitVice and I just go to setting 1 which does (I think) improve the image on a DVD. What I haven’t done is downscale with it or, and this is what I’m asking, does the BitVice downscale use Purifier for this task?

This is the one great drawback with these great new cameras. After being used to the proper, old fashioned hi rez black and white view finders on the big SD Sony cameras I find the screens very difficult to focus on, even without bright sunlight. There are various hoods that you can fit which improve the vision and ‘Hoodman’ (look up their site) do a unit that fits over the screen with a glass which enlarges the picture for easier focus. The EX3 has this as standard but then you may not want that model, it’s heavier and more expensive. I wouldn’t even try to use the EFV on the EX1 for anything other than framing. The colours are not good enough to judge exposure and no way can you focus accurately enough using that.

In my opinion BitVice for encoding and downscaling HD for DVD’s gives better results than Compressor. Well worth a try, especially as their later versions have improved quality considerably.

I know, this can cause confusion but as Gary says, the codec won’t have changed. If you need to be convinced just extend your bin, set the ‘view’ to include ‘codec’ and check the actual codec of the clip.

Seth, I always open a folder first on the drive and name it BPAV then say, the date of the shoot. I then copy the whole BPAV from the card to the new folder. I thought that any folder had to have the name BPAV in the name. Try that and then do as the others have suggested.

I’m putting HD productions to Blu-Ray and DVD. For Blu-Ray a stand alone Lacie burner into the MacPro and encoding, burning etc in Titanium Toast 10 (with BD plug-in). For DVD’s encoding in BitVice, Formatting in DVDSP, burning in Toast. All from a finished HD timeline in Media 100.
