Robin, I have had exactly this experience and I think that I just ignored it and carried on, with no ill effects. It was a while ago and hasn’t happened since. Are you able to complete the export or not?

Bernhard, the best downscale I’ve encountered is within BitVice but, of course, I only use that when encoding DVD’s from an HD timeline. Alas, the Media 100 downscale is not now what it was when we had the HDx hardware. There are of course plenty of expensive boxes to give first class downscales.
Why do you need to downscale other than to encode for DVD? Presumably you don’t now distribute or exhibit via tape, or do you? Can you not put stuff on the web in HD? Of course, for archiving we keep the files in HD or whatever codec we finished in.

Bernhard, we’re all listening! It’s the sudden rise of file based media rather than tape that’s taken a lot of us by surprise. Most of us want to concentrate our creative efforts on making decent productions, not on technicalities, but all this new stuff won’t go away. Not so long ago an HDCAM deck was essential in the chain if you wanted an HD archive copy of a production. Now we have to rely on the file not being lost when a fragile drive fails.

Bob Cole, what I mean is that I also include in the file title something to identify the shoot such as a date or location but at the very front I put BPAV as I understood that this was essential in order for the Transfer software to recognise the files. I’m surprised that you manage without doing this. You don’t try selecting items from the file do you? Those that do have been castigated by Craig and have messed up the media by doing this.

Bob, I do mostly as you do except that I’m editing in Media 100. I presume you are naming the folders that you open as BPAV before you drag the media (BPAV) files from the cards otherwise we are told dire consequences will follow. I too then use the Transfer software to select exactly the bits I want to import into the edit system.
A question now for Ian. Can I continue using the Sony Transfer, I have 2.11, for this purpose regardless of the amalgamation of this facility into the new Clip Browser version? I can never understand the need for all these constant ‘upgrades’. If it works why fiddle around? I’m able to operate exactly as I want with what I’ve got. Transfer allows very accurate selection of in and out points and importing, is there any need for me to change?

I reckon my 16 Gb cards give about 56 minutes shooting at 1920 X 1080i 25 frames. So extend from there and you’ll get an idea.
On the second camera question I would certainly think one of the EX cameras would do the job.
If it’s DOF you are worried about you can minimise this by ensuring that the iris is as wide open as possible (use the ND filters) and use as long a tele setting on the lens as possible.Michael Slowe

Although I’m not able to add any technical insight I am in business and I simply can’t believe Sony not at least attempting to help. How can the dealer possibly be in a better position to assist than Sony themselves. We are all using new technology with the EX cameras and recording to cards so mistakes inevitably will be made. You’d think that Sony would be prepared for this and able at least to advise. They are not being asked for a free meal or even being held to account for the problem – what are they afraid of?

Faster than what? If they’re QT.mov files you can just import them into a Project.

I have the Lacie BD burner (freestanding) and all I did was connect it to my MacPro via USB 2 and away I went. No install at all. I encode and burn BD’s in Toast 10 and I do have to nominate, within Toast, which burner to use as both show up, the SD burner in the Mac and the BD Lacie.
