When I said ‘safer’ I was not implying any danger in not doing so, merely that this new Sony codec is technically superior in almost every way to other older codecs and is being adopted by many in the professional world. The quality is being retained, despite the necessary compression, and, as others have noted, treatment of colour space is superior. If it is available on a given camera, I see no reason whatsoever in not using it.

Firstly it is new technology and makes much better use of the improved images created by the modern sensors. Although it still compresses, apparently the compression is more sophisticated and has less effect on picture quality. I’m only repeating what I’ve been told, particularly by Sony at one of their “days” down at Pinewood Studios.

I agree with Craig and you really should shoot in the new Sony Pro codec, XAVC. The AVCH codec is an inferior ‘prosumer codec.

Jay, you have to be very wary in messing about with the Sony camera files on a card. All sorts of stuff is there which we are warned not to disturb. If you take a look at Doug Jensen’s (of Vortex Media) wonderful Masterclass on the PXW -Z150, he explains all. You should back up the whole file marked “Private” and then use Catalyst Browse to get into it.

Chris, I feel that it’s safer to shoot in the new (greatly improved) Sony codec, XAVC and through Catalyst Browse or EditReady, transpose to the codec of your choice. In my case I use EditReady and go to ProRes 422 HQ. I’m using the Z150, not the FS7.

There are two ‘gurus’ on Picture Profiles. Doug Jensen with his Vortex Media Masterclasses (my bible, depending on the camera) and Alister Chapman (@ingenioustv.com). I find Jensen less caught up with technologies and a better explainer. He takes the ‘neutral’ feel of the Sony picture that you get ‘out of the box’, and adapts it with brilliant explanation. A look at his stuff for your given camera is a must in my opinion.

Hey Mitch, just as a matter of interest, why are you switching from your MacPro Tower? I know that these are now getting old but I still have a 2009 model and, to keep it up to speed, have installed a fast SSD Drive. I really don’t want to change and hope that I can continue with this computer for years.
