Nick, I just re read your ‘rant’. Of course improvements are welcome, although most of the recent ones are of little interest or use to me. Also, remember that the old Media 100 card gave a far better downscale than that produced with the current AJA card.
My point was though, that should the unthinkable occur, my current set up (the latest available) would probably see my time out as an editor and producer of documentaries. My most successful productions were cut on a version 8 on a Mac 3 or 4. I’m often amused at the general rush for updates but your vigorous promotion of Media 100 in your article is to be applauded.

Bernhard, there is a lot of sense in your two posts and I’m not technically qualified to query your thesis. I know that I want to continue editing with Media 100 for as long as I’m able. Presumably, even if Apple discontinue large computers such as the MacPro and Media 100 disappears (perish the thought on both counts), nothing would prevent me from happily enjoying my current set up for as long as it continued to work.

Couldn’t agree more with what Marcus has to say. As an avid (pun intended) Media 100 user I’m amazed that more editors don’t know of its existence. As I’m constantly telling people, Media 100 is the most intuitive, easy to use and reliable system available.
Although Boris has done wonders since gaining control and the constant updates have kept us well up to speed, I wonder at their apparent hesitancy in shouting how good Media 100 is. The Apple changes in direction should provide ample opportunities and there have been previous users of Media 100 returning to the fold but not many new ones. I’m constantly receiving marketing E Mails from Boris for many of their products but there’s never a mention of Media 100. Why is this?
Anyway, those of us ‘in the know’ can continue to enjoy the benefits of Media 100 but one could be be fearful that Boris might not have his heart in it and that would be a disaster for we who would hate to have to move edit platforms. Could we have some re assurance from Boris people who, we know, do read this forum?

Jacob, I find that with my HD acquired media, once I have my edit, still in HD I export to QT .mov (generally in the ProRes codec) and take the file into BitVice which then does a brilliant downscale to SD and at the same time encodes for the DVD. The quality of my DVD’s using this method is great, especially when played on the new Blu-Ray players which automatically do an ‘upscale’ for playing on an HD screen.

Well Bob, quite a salutary lesson, Craig will say “I’m always telling you so”. I have to confess I only drag and drop my BPAV files but realise that Clip Browser should be used. No problem to date but sod’s law being what it is…….!
I always convert my native EX media to ProRes HQ 422 on import to my NLE (Media 100) and everyone agrees that it’s a great codec. Robust, good quality and very economic as far as drive space goes.

QT 7 is certainly the way to go in whatever circumstances, version 10 will not do many of the things that 7 will and is a retrograde step (where have we heard that before?).

Jean, when I encode my DVD’s with BitVice, then mix the ac3 & m2v in Studio Pro and burn in Toast they all start playing automatically in any player, without me specifying anything. Thats on a Mac, may be different on a PC but I doubt it.

Melodie, no, not everyone on this forum is “an advanced user” and certainly not when we all started. We’re lucky to have Floh as our ‘master’ but really the only way to really get comfortable with the software is to work with it and gradually find all you need for your particular objectives.
Speaking as someone who graduated to digital editing from film (are you old enough to remember film – I suspect not!), I was in a right old state but was advised at the time that Media 100 was the nearest thing. I never regretted taking that advice but I must confess I had a great deal of practical help from my suppliers and others, some free and some paid. You don’t want your creative juices impaired by having to think too much about the technical aspects so do try and get some practical assistance if at all possible.

Dave, I now understand all your points. You refer to the fact that you don’t want to shoot all your footage in SP mode. I don’t think many users of the EX cameras shoot any of their footage in SP mode – that would be at 25mbps and is SD. When I mentioned shooting times for the cards I assumed it would all be in HQ mode at 35mbps (VBR).
