On reading this I have the suspicion that you have somehow managed to have set the gain very high. This would distort the image and be the cause of the grain. You have the gain switch on the side, make sure it is set to L and in the camera Set menu set the gain for Low at -3. I then have my M set at 0 and my H at 9 but the important thing is to always shoot with the lowest gain that the light allows.
As to white balance, make sure you are not using the auto setting. I presume, in the bright Thai sunshine that you are using the built in ND filter in order to control your exposure at sensible settings.
Sorry if all this is elementary to you but you do say you are new to this camera so this may be a help.

No Bob, they won’t necessarily look the same if there are different settings for each channel or if the signal strengths differ. But you are right that it will still be obvious if an audio signal is there or not.

Could it be that you are hearing only one track? I find that the menu to choose which tracks you monitor quite confusing. The radio mic track could be suffering from interference from something like a mobile phone in the pocket of your subject. I’ve had a shoot completely disrupted by the wearer of a radio mic leaving their mobile phone switched on.

Your Mac friend would love to receive a QT .mov file in the ProRes 422 HQ codec, that retains the HD quality but occupies far less drive space than other HD codecs. I do all my XDCAM editing in this codec.

I have to say that shooting 1080i ( PAL) has always given me first rate results when I use BitVice for encoding for DVD, regardless of the amount of movement of the subject matter. The point about downscaling for the DVD may be valid but one very good feature of the latest versions of BitVice is the quality of their down scaling.

Not so Ron, I have neither on my MacBook and download all the time. I use the Transfer software for importing to my edit suite and Media 100.

You might well be right in your definitions but that is not always how it works.
Although I’m encoding for 2 Dolby Stereo with an ac3 file, in my edit I adjust my audio channels to centre so that I get the same from both speakers as I generally shoot with one channel or at least select the edit channel from one of two inputs. Except that with a music sequence I leave as it’s recorded, ie. left and right and when the DVD plays it will play as a CD would, in stereo. It this sensible or should I being doing this differently?

Joseph, like I said in my earlier post my home insurance would cover accidental damage to kit, even outside the home. The damage on location that you suppose would be covered. There may be a problem however with regard to the professional nature of your activity. As a non commercial film maker I had to have additional insurance while filming a ‘making of’ for the DVD of a feature film, but that was mostly concerned with public liability.
Maintenance service contracts are, I feel, a waste of money and mostly favour the people granting them. I never accept them with domestic appliances and it pays off, likewise with film gear, how often (or likely) is it that you are faced with an expensive repair, damage notwithstanding?

Don’t you have insurance coverage for all your belongings? I have my house and contents annually insured with items such as cameras and associated equipment additionally covered when away from the home, including accidental damage. Standard practice here in the UK, not so in the US?

Julienne, take the advice of Chris and Craig, the smaller Sony’s are very good. Go to a good Sony agent and really investigate, I’ve seen some wonderful stuff from those cameras but beware, as explained, the larger chip really offers so many advantages.
