What do you mean the gain is turned off. You can’t turn it off, only to either high, medium or low (H, M & L) on the gain switch. The actual levels are set in the menu. Maybe the settings are too high. Most people set the low gain at -3 which should give no noise at all. Even 0 or 9 give me no noise either.

As you will surely know, you can only access the Audio Input level settings in the Audio menu, when the mic switches on the back of the camera are set to Manual. Then I set mine as follows: Ch-1 (for my on camera Sony mic -41dBu and Ch-2 (for the ME-66 off camera) -47dBu. However, I’m ashamed to say, I do most of my shooting with the mics set to Auto as I find with documentary ‘run & gun’, there is quite enough to do adjusting focus and aperture without worrying about manual audio levels.

Sandy, I always use Verbatim discs, both DVD and BD. The code for the Blu-Ray is BD-R 25GB 4x and I use the Photo Printable surface which is white and takes a nice print from the Epsom Stylus Photo P50 printer using the Print CD software.

David, now you’ve taken the plunge there is one vital task that I urge you to perform. Get hold of a copy of the DVD by Vortex Media on which Doug Jensen goes through everything you need to know about the EX1 (don’t know if it’s been updated for the ‘R’). This is really important as it’ll save you hours and hours and prevent you making elementary mistakes if you’re new to the camera and tapeless work. I was given one by mr seller (we do things like that here in the UK!) but it is a MUST. Good luck, great camera.

Sandy, yes, I just drag my ProRes file into Toast. The video tab is checked and Blu-Ray is the indicated disc. Toast does the rest. In the option box I have the bit rate at 8mbps with a max of 16 so presumably it’s a variable rate depending on the content. Audio is Dolby Digital at 256kbps. Also indicated is 16:9 aspect with Top Field first (my stuff is shot interlaced).

Why not just borrow his BD burner if it is free standing? I do all my BD’s with Toast Titanium Pro 11 (which is what you probably have) and the results are great.

Eric, you misunderstood my point to Colin. He wondered why BD was not being embraced by the media world quite in the same way that DVD was. I merely agreed with him.

Colin, I’m certainly not an experienced pro when it comes to BD but it occurs to me that maybe you can get hold of the file that the HD tape might be archived to. That way you’re going to be in the best position to break it all down to do what you want?
As to your point about the distribution and exhibition of HD material, I’m equally puzzled that BD hasn’t become the standard format. Surely few are playing from tape, so it has to be files on drives (best for quality) or BD, the most convenient. Anyone have ideas on this?
