I have an image that has its subject matter in the center with transparency as the background. But on the edges of the subject there is a sawtooth rather than a smooth edge. How can I fix this?

Did you try to make a selection of your subject (using the appropriate selection tool) and reduce the selection with 1 pixel? Then you can inverse the selection and delete the content of the selection (thus deleting this 1-pixel area).

Can also try feathering selection first and using the masks panel or refine selection command first
