Yet another mov question…
I’m sorry to add to the growing list of threads on this topic.
I am able to open some .mov files in Vegas with no problem (Sorenson and ITunes files) but not the .mov files generated from the JVC camera used to record the footage. What gives? The camera .mov files only open audio but not video. The other .mov files open beautifully.
Sounds like a codec issue but, if it is, I can’t track down the codec I’d need. I have upgraded and downgraded QuickTime to no avail.
Is it time for me to just break down and use a video conversion package? (worried about quality loss, however)
[Should mention that I have both Vegas 8 & 10 on 32 bit systems]

well, I’m not a pro and my knowledge in this area is fairly small but I believe I ran into the same problem right when I began using Vegas…
I believe that you need to have Quick time 7.6.2 or 7.6.4 because the Apples latest quicklime update became incompatible with the Vegas scripts.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I tried that and several other versions of QuickTime. They do let me open various .mov files, just not ones produced by the JVC camera.
I’ll keep searching but I’m beginning to think bringing the footage in untouched isn’t possible with the way these .mov files are packaged.

What’s the model number of your camcorder, which version of Vegas are you using and is it Pro or Movie Studio?

Vegas 8 Pro & 10 Pro (two different machines), 32 bit.
The camera is a JVC GY-HM100U.
(The operator inadvertently recorded a large chunk of footage as .mov as opposed to .mp4)

Found a great solution. JVC has a link on their site to a free download called MP4toMPEG which can convert .mov files to near lossless mpeg files WITHOUT reencoding the video (it only reencodes the audio). I converted an 80MB .mov file and the result was a beautiful 79MB mpeg file that opened fine in Vegas.
This was a Godsend as all the other converters I tried dumbed down the video too much to be used for editing purposes.
