I hope you’re wrong, Tim, but the train is definitely headed that way in certain portions of the industry, especially those where you might have a one-person show, such as a media manager/marketing person who is pressured to do everything in-house. In that case, the pressure to have a mindless button that makes an effect, tweaks the audio, outputs a codec, and anything else which can be built to give options, is real. As long as the end product is ok, the person will keep his/her job, and the vaguely acceptable final result will go to the web, device, or wherever…

I’ve been doing quite a bit of work lately for production houses who might have editors on staff with a bit of knowledge of effects, but not the ability to do the higher end stuff. I still find that in most cases, they prefer the custom effects to the built-in stuff they might find in Motion, or straight plugins and template based software. That’s not to say it’s bad – in some cases I’ve told the producer that we can cut the budget a bit by buying a template and then tweaking it, but they generally prefer the custom stuff…
