    I’m hoping there’s some way to make this work in FCPX…

    I’m trying to make an animated element appear completely opaque on the left, and gradually change to be completely transparent on the right.

    Were the element a solid bar, you can imagine it might look something like this:

    =====—– –  –   –    –     –      –       –        –           –

    The element itself is animated, but the X co-ordinates of the opacity levels would stay the same.

    Is there any way to achieve this desired effect?

    Thanks so much for your help.

    It’s a little inelegant, but I (more or less) achieved what I was hoping for by using a custom 4-point mask tool and setting feathering extremely high while sending the Y-coordinates way off into the nether reaches of cyber-space.

    I’m still curious if there’s a better way to handle this, though.

    Thanks again!

    If you put a gradient (Black to white, left to right) above the graphic as a connected clip, and then change its blend mode to Silhouette Luma, I think you’ll get what you’re after.
