XP/Windows 7 anomaly, playback problems
3GHz P4, 2GB Ram. ATI HD3850 AGP video. An old system, I know. But hear me out.
Editing DVD .mpg files. With Windows XP installed, Vegas 10 handles them almost flawlessly smooth, even while recording audio. The same goes for raw HDV files. Premiere Pro doesn’t have much problem with the .mpg files, but it chokes up a bit with the HDV, even moreso with something as simple as brightness/contrast applied.
On the exact same system, with Windows 7 installed, Premiere plays the .mpg and HDV files almost flawlessly and the framerate doesn’t even drop when simple effects are added. But suddenly Vegas has major issues with even the .mpg files, and the framerate of playback is choppy, especially when recording audio at the same time.
Can anyone help shed light on why the performance of these two programs is swapped depending on the operating system I use? I can’t seem to make them agree. The biggest performance drop is Vegas in Windows 7. Premiere CS3 is at least tolerable in XP, but I’m striving for perfection without having to upgrade.
