    Hi,

The capture tool is annoying me.

    * Every time I open it, it defaults to Composite in even though I only use firewire. My template is set to IE1394.

    * Every time I switch from Composite to Firewire, this happens sluggishly, and then sets the resolution to 1:1, even though my Media Creation settings specify 15:1.

    * Every time I batch capture something, when I insert a new tape the J30 Digi deck is sent into a minute of rapidly flicking between FF/RW until it finally decides at least a whole minute later to head for the pre-roll point. Sometimes I even need to spool the tape there manually.

    Xpress Pro 5.2.2, 3gig RAM, HP xp4200

Does this happen to you guys too?

This will only work if you have Mojo 🙂

In the digitize tool (after setting your input to firewire), click on the WFM/V-Scope icon. At the bottom of that window (you don’t have any controls in firewire), click on ‘save as’. In that window, type ‘Default’. Type it exactly like that, without the quotation marks. Firewire is now set as the default.

    Thanks Jon,

I do have Mojo, I’ll try it now. Any ideas with the batch issues?

If you don’t mind the dumb questions first! 🙂

-Do you have continuous time code on tape?
-Are you controlling the deck via firewire or RS422? (According to the qualified devices list – https://www.avid.com/content/8927/SUPPORTED%20DEVICES%20FOR%20AVID%20EDITOR%20PRODUCTS.pdf, only RS422 is supported on the J3 deck…)
    -Are your templates set correctly?

Have you tried using a different deck template (generic, maybe?)
Have you tried trashing your MCState files and buiding a new deck template?

That’s all I can think of with limited caffine intake…

    Hi Jon,

Thanks for the responses. I tried the Default setting in the video tool, but it hasn’t worked. Is there anything more to it?

As for the RS422 issue, I actually didn’t realise that FW wasn’t supported. We are indeed using FW to control the deck. The reason for this workflow is that it keeps the audio and video in sync. If you digitise using RS422, export the OMF for the online and then redig the vision on a DVW500/Adrenaline setup, all the audio clips are six frames out of sync or something like that.

Obviously we could get the DVW to recapture the sound as well, but capturing the sound through FW means there’s no discrepancy in audio levels from offline to audio post. And it saves a lot of time when redigitising.

The J30 is only occasionally used to batch capture in the offline environment, but it’s irritating all the same.

Did you selcect the desired input, type in Default EXACTLY without the quotes, then save? It should work like a champ…

FW makes perfect sense in your workflow. There’s an offset (I forget where it is and what it does – I’m currently sipping coffee in my jammies at home) that might help you, if you wanted to try RS422. Theoretically (which is code for ‘I don’t know’!) if you put tone at the head of the tape, and set the levels everytime you digitize, your audio should stay the same through out the process… But then you are converting your video to analog, with possible loss of quality…
