  • XML PNG subtitle stream looks “fuzzy” in FCP

Posted by David Smith on August 4, 2010 at 5:36 am

Hey big brains, I am using XML with a set of PNG files as a subtitle stream (Korean language) and they look pretty fuzzy and soft. Far as I know I’m importing them correctly. The PNGs themselves look okay. Just fuzzy in the simulator and when burned or put to a DVD or Quicktime file. Is the “text” version of XML for Final Cut a better way to go??

    Many thanks….

What is the original codec of the images you are overlaying and what sequence settings are you using?

Are you judging the image quality on an external monitor or just the FCP screen?

Original video ripped to PAL MOV file from a PAL DVD with DVxDVD and it looks good. I keep the FCP settings the same, import the XML PNG stream as DV PAL. I did find that making the font a little larger, in this case a 30 (then I have to size them down a bit for this project) looks a little better. Still a little fuzzy though. I’m going by my final output, which in this case is an MOV file, but then I gotta transcode it to a MPEG 2 file for the client…

DV codec is the likely culprit. It is shite on text. It is also the only PAL codec that is lower field so in future, you should try to work in ProRes. Your rip would have also looked better going to ProRes.

You can drop everything into a ProRes sequence and re-render which will make the text look much better. However, the shift fields filter will automatically apply to all the DV footage which is only an issue if you have slo mo’d anything.

If you have then make a quicktime of the slo mo clips using QT movie (current settings) and replace the originals in the ProRes sequence with the QT file. this bakes in the slo mo before the shift fields filter.
