  • XL2 – 30p clips in a progressive timeline (field dominance=none) look bad, lower field first looks fine.

I have a simple sequence and all the clips were shot on a XL2 in 30p. I realize they are in a interlaced wrapper. I have a sequence that is set to lower field first and everything looks fine. When I changed the field dominance to “none” everything appears a bit off and the clarity is a bit mixed.

The whole sequence looks fine except for all my transitions and titles.

This is a web commercial and has no need to be interlaced.

How can I work this to be a progresive timeline?

    Thanks

Are you viewing this on an external monitor or on the canvas?

Hi Richard, I view the clips on my canvas and on another LCD. The video is intended for these types of displays though. I do not have a NTSC monitor yet. But it shouldn’t matter for progressive footage right?

I should say that I do have a Dell LCD hooked up as my monitor so when I do a Command-F12 my canvas goes to that window.

You mentioned it looks bad at transitions and titles. Under the RT Extreme tab on your timeline, do you have it set to Dynamic? That would account for FCP showing your video blocky at transitions and titles. Set that to high. The tricky thing is, even though your not going out to tape or DVD, the canvas is still not a good reference at all, especially for monitoring field issues (I.E. Progressive vs. Interlaced)
