  • XL1 glitches for first 30 seconds of tape

On an older XL1 I’m working with, it seems that the first 30 seconds or so of footage on every tape are glitched (as if the heads were dirty). After that point, the footage will clear up and the rest of the tape will be fine with no dropouts. The camera has only been used with one brand of tapes ever (Maxell). Head cleaning hasn’t made a difference. Any ideas what would cause this, or how to resolve it? Thanks!

The heads are so worn down it might need to be sent in for repairs. Have you tried tried playing the tapes through a deck? Or, do you play the tapes through the camera? I kind of shy away from that now, as my brand new GL-2 gave me the dirty head warning after only 5 hours of use!
