  • XENA LH or 2K? 720p 23.98 sequence – to 720p 60p or 50p broadcast monitor

    Hi Guys.

    We have been discussed it in the las threat..but I’m not sure about what’s the best Xena card to do the following worklow;

I have an uncompressed 720p 23.98 (1280×720 square pixel) project, but my broadcast monitor JVC DTV1710 can only do this HD formats; 720p 60p/ 720p 50p/ 1080 24psf(HD component input).

In last threat, Tim said that Xena LH can output the 720p 23.98 timeline (via premiere), converting it to a 720p 60p component output.
    For me this is perfect!

    But how it’s done?

The card just add a 2:3 pulldown to make it 60p?
And if it’s 60p (should have NO fields) how this pulldowns works? (Usually 2:3 pulldown add some fields)

Have anyone really test this workflow in a real world situation?
Cause I have have a blackmagic Extreme card and when I did try to work in SD 23.98 (adding pulldown to NTSC monitoring) it produces a weird motion issue, like a problem with a 2:3 pulldown insertion…

I’m about to buy a Xena card and I need to know what’s the recomended one for what i’m intended to do;XENA LH or XENA 2K ( I woul prefer LH because i’s cheaper)

    Thanks in Advance
    Bernardo

Xena 2k/LH playout (*denotes Xena 2k only)

720p23.976 (with added 2:3 pulldown) plays out to 720p59.94 and can be converted to 1080i29.97* or 720x486i29.97

720p24 (with added 2:3 pulldown) plays out to 720p60 and can be converted to 1080i30*

Pulldown is added to 720p 23.976/24.00 as a 2:3 frame repeating pattern when being played out as 720p 59.94/60.00. So a frame sequence of 1,2,3,4,5,6,etc of 720p 23.976/24.00 frames on disc will be played out as 1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4,5,5,6,6,6,etc thru the Xena card. This pulldown adds no fields but just replicates frames. This is done according to the 720p spec since only 720p 50.00/59.94/60.00 can be transmitted on HD-SDI or HD Analog Component and pulldown must be added(during playback) or removed(during capture) when trying to use any other 720p fps.

    Thanks for the reply!

    Nice explanation!

So there’s no field when the pulldown is added, only repeated progressive frames. GOOD!

I did contact JVC to find out if my monitor JVC DTV-1710 could do 720p 59.94 format.
    Any idea?

    Thanks again.

here is the link to the specs for that monitor. If you look in the ‘Scanning Frequency’ section, it shows the 59.94 so Im quite certain that monitor will preview it.

    Double Check with JVC though.

    Hi Bernardo,
You stated you were thinking of purchasing the Xena LH of 2K card. I have a XENA 2K card & Breakout Box. The price new is approximately $3,300. It is new in the box and is covered by a 3 year warranty. I got it a few months ago, can’t remember whether it was August or September. I use Avid Express Pro which is not supported for the XENA 2K card so I am offering it for sale. If you are still wanting to purchase this card, please make me an offer.
