  • Xena LH Drops Frames in HD Playback

One of our LH workstations recently went south, so I re-commissioned an unused BOXX workstation to take it’s place. All is well, except playback on our HD-SDI monitor of any HD material is unreliable.

    Specs of the new system:
    – BOXX 8200 Series
    – Dual Xeon 3.06 GHz
    – 3 GB RAM
    – Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 video
    – Windows XP Pro 32-bit
    – Premiere CS4 4.2.1
    – Xena 4.2 drivers
    – Sonnet Tempo RAID card with ProMax 2.5 TB External RAID

    Specs of the old system:
    – BOXX 7400 Series
    – AMD Opteron Dual Core 2.0 GHz
    – 2 GB RAM
    – Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 video
    – Windows XP Pro 32-bit
    – Premiere CS3
    – Xena 3.5 drivers
    – Sonnet Tempo RAID card with ProMax 2.5 TB External RAID

The new system is using most of the same hardware that I pulled from the old system, and it’s a fresh install of Windows with all proper drivers installed.

SD clips playback fine, but any P2 HD clips (720 or 1080) drops frames.

BUT, if I start a regular DVCPROHD project (not using the Xena LH card), clips playback fine (in the computer preview window). So I think the system can keep up with the HD material, I just can’t get the LH card to output reliably.

    Thoughts? Thanks!

By chance, have you tried to install CS3 on the new system with the old drivers to see if you could make frame rate?

That was something I was thinking about, but was trying to avoid it. If I must, I will.

I took this opportunity to upgrade to CS4 on that system since it handles AVC-Intra and better integrates P2 material. But if I can’t get it to work well, I guess I’ll have to lose those added features.

The system specs should be acceptable for 1080/720 playback, right?

It should be noted that we also have a similar LH system running on an HP XW8600. On that system (dual Xeon 2.5 GHz 4 GB RAM Vista 32-bit), I can’t playback 1080 clips. But 720 clips playback fine. I was hoping our newly-configured 3.06 GHz system would perform better. But at this point, it performs worse.

Well, we downgraded to PPRo CS3 and the 3.5 AJA drivers, and on the same hardware/setup, HD 1080 clips playback perfectly.

So, something must be up with PPro CS4.2.1 and the AJA 4.2 drivers. I’m not going to worry about it right now. I’m just happy it works.

    Thanks.
