    Hi guys,
I’m hoping someone here can point me as to how AMA works and to help solve my workflow issue. I’m a smoke editor who needs to devise a way to take an Avid MC project in and be able to link back to the original media.

    Background:
We have a longform project being ‘offlined’ on MC5.02 using XDCam sXs material (35Mbit). The workflow is that it’ll eventually come to smoke for finishing and grading, hence I am using the AAF to relink back to the original camera files.

The problem I have is that the AMA from what I’m told, has appended all filenames with .new.01, hence the AAF points to these renamed filenames whereas the original camera data is the original filename to which I now can’t relink to.

We did a little test and I was able to successfully relink by excluding every attribute except timecodes. Now, whilst that works ok on a short sequence, it will not on a long form program where there will be overlapping timecodes. I understand AMA consolidates the material and create new media. Is this new media still the same format as the original camera files as in that case, I imagine I could relink to the consolidated files?

I ‘d appreciate if somebody could explain to me why these files are being renamed as it seems it would upset the workflow to any other system that uses EDL/AAF.

These guys have already begun ingesting for a TV series so the sooner I can sort this out, the less re-ingest there possibly will be.

Many thanks for reading this far and for any insight.

    Regards,

My work flow involves sending AAF audio files for sweetening. So I don’t any experience with large linked media AAF transfers. Also, I generally don’t work in AMA mode if possible.

The addition of “new” to the file names can be caused by a certain operations. For example decomposing a sequence or sometimes when creating an AAF. In version 4 when you exported an AAF with the media embedded it created new clips with the “new” added to the file name. I don’t know if MC 5 does this as well. It sounds like the work flow your describing doesn’t involve an embedded AAF.

    Hi Gary,
The idea is that they export an AAF WITHOUT the media.
I then use this (almost like an EDL), to simply relink back to the original XDCam EX files. The issue is that the AAF is looking for the .new.01 files whereas I am trying to link to original files. I’m wondering if anyone knows if I can link to the consolidated files?

when you insert an SxS card into the reader it opens an ama folder on the avid, which of course is only online whilst the card is present.
This ama folder can then be consolidated in its original format onto a media drive on the avid. The .new attribute is given in this process and the master clips can be linked to these new files.

I assume that if you can access this online avid media you can link to it.

I have found problems in trying to link to the SxS media directly in that each file is its own folder together with metadata etc and is in a mp4 interleaved format that avid cannot directly link to.

Has any one found a way of linking directly bak to the SxS card? ( or a disk image of it?)

I received a project from a laptop computer (MC5) with a rough cut of a sequence. I brought this onto my desktop and opened the sequence. The SxS card media was shown as offline (on the laptops C drive).
Although I mounted the original SxS card I could not get the MC4 to link to it.
In fact my consolidated master clips were made off line as the sequence still thought they were on the C drive despite still being present on my media drive and the SxS card.

    Any suggestions?
