XDCAM HD question and FCP use of same
Posted by Dan Riley on May 6, 2006 at 6:27 pmFirst, is Sony delivering the camera now?
Secondly, regarding transfer of data from the disks,
is this like copying files from a CD or DVD, then
importing into FCP, or do I have to play back the disks
in the Sony deck and output that into FCP in real time?Third, if I can copy files from the disk, what kind of
disk reader do I use for this?I’m looking into this camera/format for the expressed
reason to same time importing multicam shows into FCP.
If I have to play the disks in realtime in the Sony player
this will not be the solution I’m looking for. Thanks,

May 6, 2006 at 6:49 pmNever mind.
I googled and found the answers.I also found out the XDCAM HD 350 camera can be fed timecode
like the other Beta/Digibeta cameras. This sounds like what I’ve been hoping for
to speed up my multicam productions. I didn’t read whether
it can be attached to a remote control or CCU for shading though.
If anyone knows that answer, chirp up.Thanks,

we got the first one’s up here is Toronto for the feature we are working onNO you will need a file transfer program from Sony (no known release date) to capture ONLY the HDV version of the footage (the 25 mb signal not the better 35 mb signal) to be able to use the footage in a future version of FCP that isn’t released yet (no know release date)
you could do what I am doing and going into FCP over HDSDI (best way at this point, you don’t have to deal with the mpeg2 compression other then at the source)
to get the fottage in when the “options” happen you would need the camera or the deck as the feeder no other disk readers options

May 8, 2006 at 5:08 amWhat about Flip for Mac.
https://www.flip4mac.com/mxf.htm
They seem to have a plug in for Quicktime that does
something or other for MXF files.
Do you know if this works or not?For my workflow, it won’t make any sense to go to this
new format unless it’s a file transfer situation that gets
me away from real time transfers like you are doing with
HDSDI. I can do that now. I don’t want to do that anymore.
I do 4 camera simultaneous timecode studio shoots
and want a more efficient way of preparing for the edit.
I could buy 4 Powermac G5s and slap AJA cards in them
and feed them all with the output of the camera CCU,
hit capture now and I’d have hard disk files of my
4 cameras. Simple actually, but costly unless I did
shows every week, which I don’t.Thanks,

May 8, 2006 at 7:45 amthat works
for the general XDCAM (DVCAM on a disk, Standard def, the version that has been out for a couple of years now)
it does not do the XDCAM HD (at least as far as I know from checking there site) from what I heard at NAB, they are working on one
I don’t know how long it will be but I heard it is around $500 as wellIF you can get the footage from the deck
when Sony release’s the logging programAFAIK

May 9, 2006 at 10:57 pmYap, I have the same problem with a PDW-F330 camera. The problem is worst because the camera output is analog component HD, in the PDW-F350 the output is a HD-SDI (and you can find very chip boards with this input). We will buy a new HD Extreme from BlackMagic, that have this input (analog component HD).
About Flip4MAC consider that the MXF transfer work in a Ethernet connection, and you need a Player or Recorder desk unit.
Really I saw the XDCAM HD TRANSFER software demostration in Apple booth at NAB and is very impressive. A Sony person told me that will be available in June. I can not wait…

May 10, 2006 at 4:05 amIf you will, could you tell us about that demo at NAB?
Was this data transfer from a Sony disk deck ($15k I think)
with an ethernet connector to the Mac, and using that
beta Sony software? Or was this done some other way? Thanks,

May 11, 2006 at 10:47 pmReally they do not show the connection between the recorder and the computer. I suppose that the connection was by firewire because they told about a direct link with the camera and the cameras has only the firewire. If you remember the first XDCAM generation was available a ethernet card for the camcorders, but with XDCAM HD I do not see a similar solution. Also the demo show a direct access to the disk (a FAM mode?), and I think that is a firewire.
About the recorder and player my idea is that this equipments are for traditional editing suite. I am investigating a board that is offering a MPEG-2 TS (transport stream) in/out. This board will permit at the PDW-F30 (low cost player) in/out from a HDV device (computer?)?
More than this I can say you that the demo was very great, and was showed every two hours in the main theather in Apple Booth. The intoduction was a demo tape from CNN. The feel I got is a great cooperation between Sony and Apple and a strong support of this format…
