Can you edit xdcam hd 1080i 30 (60i) footage with premiere cs4? You can set up a project in that format, but why then can’t you import the footage? What codec is missing? How do I download it? Any help appreciated!

PS I tried to get an answer over at the beginners premiere site, but didn’t get an answer.

With the info you’ve given us, there should be no problems. You’ve imported via Clip Browser I asssume? Codec is MP4. Have you gotten as far as getting your clips on the hard drive?

Thanks for writing back. I’m losing hair over here…

I produced a shoot that was shot on xdcam. My cameraman got the files to a mac formatted disc, along with a folder of “proxy” files. He gave those files to me on a mac format drive.

I brought all the proxies over to the PC and a few of the high res clips.

My copy of premiere would not import the large files – “missing codec” – but it would open the proxies. Nor would my PC, with either windows media player or quicktime, open the hi-res clips. (in QT it opened the clips as black – sound would be there but no image.)

I edited the piece with proxy files, assuming that I could delete the proxies and export the project sequences to avid PC, FCP (mac) or a newer version of premiere on PC.

A friend with FCP and a Mac was able to import the edl but not link the files to the full-res files.

They could also easily open the high res files with their version of QT.

So Perhaps my first goal should be to merely VIEW the hi-res files on my PC. I have QT 7 – not qt pro, which for some reason refuses to upgrade.

Do the Mpeg 4 files need qt pro to be viewed?

Thanks for the help. I downloaded clip viewer from sony but can’t find any literature on it – and it won’t import the proxy files or the hi res files.

I appreciate any insight you may have into my situation.

    Yours

There is a long list of supported file formats for CS4, both video and audio. You could always use the capture window, and import that way.

Sorry I cannot be of more help. You may need to get someone to come to your edit suite personally, and check your situation out.
